About the Book

Learn how retirement really works before it's too late…

"This book is the best I've seen on how to navigate the retirement savings question." (Forbes)

Most so-called "experts" plug your numbers into a retirement formula to tell you how much money you need to retire. Unfortunately, the conventional approach is fundamentally flawed. If you fail to learn how retirement savings truly works, then you'll either underspend and be miserable or overspend and run out of money.

How Much Money Do I Need to Retire takes you beyond the scientific facade of modern retirement planning. Author and former hedge fund manager Todd R. Tresidder has helped thousands of people find financial freedom through his website and podcast. Now you too can use his advice to take the guesswork out of your retirement planning.

In this book, you'll learn:

  • Why the best way to describe most retirement estimates is garbage-in/garbage-out
  • The five critical assumptions that can destroy your financial security
  • How to reduce the amount you need to retire by as much as $600,000
  • Three strategies to maximize spending today while protecting for the future
  • How to calculate the amount of money you really need to retire on the first try without software, online calculators, or being a math genius

Read this book to know more about your retirement planning than your financial adviser.

About the Reviews

This book is a quick and refreshing read that forces you to rethink your retirement strategy. While most books on personal finance and retirement planning focus on stockpiling money into government-created retirement vehichles (think IRA, 401k, Roth vs. Traditional plans, etc.), the author encourages you to take a much wider viewpoint.

Some of the concepts remind me of those from the Rich Dad series by Robert Kiyosaki (which I think is an excellent series). Ideas like multiple streams of income, building and focusing on cashflow, not necessarily just your "number," and other paradigm shifters.

If you're tired of the traditional retirement claptrap, I recommend giving this book a read. It was quite refreshing!

*********************************

This book is a fantastic eye opener about the shortcomings of current retirement thinking. It gets a bit heavy in the middle but I would suggest you stay with it. It doesn't just expose the holes in the Retirement Planning Industry's "Preferred Model" It offers a viable, safer alternative whilst showing you how to retire better and earlier. If you have 20 or more years left until retirement this book is a should read soon. If you have less than 20 years until retirement this book is a must read now!

*********************************

The best section of this book was the final model, regarding setting up a system of cash flow income that exceeds your expenses, while preserving diversified assets that throw it off as well as grow at at least the inflation rate. Combine this with the second model of creative lifestyle planning to reduce expenses / increase savings, and you've got a powerful set of tools.

I also like how the author redefines "retiring" as having more freedom and just being able to do the things you want to do with your time, whether it's hobbies, travel, community involvement, or working doing something that is fulfilling other than monetarily. For me, all of this amounts to figuring out what you really need / want in life, and how to smartly re-prioritize things.
