About the Author

Dr. Jim Loehr is Chairman, CEO, and Co-founder of the Human Performance Institute, a training company that has successfully utilized energy management technology to improve the productivity and engagement levels of elite performers from the world of business, sport, medicine, and law enforcement for over 30 years. Short and sweet. I was getting into time management materials and came across this book. This will change your perspective on how you spend your time, energy and life. Rather than trying to manage time, it focuses on managing your energy level to maximize each day. I do have some flexibility with my work schedule so it was easier to adopt some of their ideas. It helped me to review how I spent my time, my hobbies and interests and to identify the important things in my life. Then I was able to make it all work by focusing on my energy level rather what time i should be doing them.

Our coach in a course I attended highly recommended this book as part of our personal development plan. It turns out to be one of most holistic read on energy management. It speaks about how as human being we work most effectively in oscillation (cycles of expending energy followed with recovery) rather than linearly. The key concept is that development starts from physical to emotional, mental and finally spiritual energy; however change is top down in the reverse direction. The authors have used the methods to help top athletes and corporate executives perform at their best by developing positive rituals. Excellent read with explanation of principles followed with examples and action items. The last chapter provides a great summary of the principles and probably it's better to read that to get a roadmap of the concepts and then jump into the chapters for details. This book changed my life--not in a big, motivational speaker type way, but in a more subtle, very energizing way.

The central thesis of the book is this: that your energy is a limited resource. How you handle your day depletes or adds to your energy supply.

After taking heed of the book's advice and implementing its suggestions, my energy levels shot up. It took a little while, but eating at regular short intervals of low-glycemic food, exercising regularly, and using habits to entrench these changes into my lifestyle brought me a significant increase in energy and happiness.

But there's a big warning. DON'T BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU AREN'T GOING TO DO ANYTHING. You might as well go buy another copy of "Who Moved My Cheese" or the "Purpose Driven Life" and try to extract meaning from those. This book is a workbook that provides you the tools on how to increase your energy levels, it's not a panacea and will not work for anyone unwilling to invest the effort.
