About the Book

The #1 New York Times bestselling guide to decluttering your home and the inspiration for the hit Netflix show Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.

Despite constant efforts to declutter your home, do papers still accumulate like snowdrifts and clothes pile up like a tangled mess of noodles?

Japanese cleaning consultant Marie Kondo takes tidying to a whole new level, promising that if you properly simplify and organize your home once, you’ll never have to do it again. Most methods advocate a room-by-room or little-by-little approach, which doom you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever. The KonMari Method, with its revolutionary category-by-category system, leads to lasting results. In fact, none of Kondo’s clients have lapsed (and she still has a three-month waiting list).

With detailed guidance for determining which items in your house “spark joy” (and which don’t), this international bestseller featuring Tokyo’s newest lifestyle phenomenon will help you clear your clutter and enjoy the unique magic of a tidy home—and the calm, motivated mindset it can inspire.

About the Reviews

This book changed our lives! Seriously. You can absolutely have a family and kids and do this. It took us a few months to purge everything... 75+ kitchen bags of stuff and a call to 1800GOTJUNK (and we still have stuff to donate in the garage), but we eventually got rid of it all. I hired an organizer to help me figure out how to organize what was left (I have ADHD, so all of this sorting and organizing was one of the most difficult things I had to do all year.) Clear bins and labels are the storage place of choice if you've got ADHD.

I kept what I loved, and I limited multiple items (like dishes) based on our family size. I didn't keep many extras of anything. It feels so good!

My house is neat and clean and it just stays that way now with almost no effort. I thought this was impossible! It is SO worth the effort, even if it takes you months.

The moment I heard about this book, I bought it. I had been attempting to clear out unnecessary clutter and junk from my life. I chose the kindle version because I didn't want another book sitting on a shelf somewhere collecting dust.

I started reading, and was torn between putting it down as soon as I ran across something that struck me, and sticking with it and finishing it, which is recommended.

I am never one to follow something 100%, since what works for one person will not necessarily what will work for another, but there is something to be gained from reading this book. Find the joy in your life, be grateful, and make conscious decisions about all the things (and people!) you allow to be in your life!

*********************************

Like many life changes, like loosing weight, getting into shape, or getting back into church, it has to be the right time for you. When I saw the title of the book I knew tidying up would change my life and that it was the right time for me. The book is short enough to read quickly and so you can move right into the project. I felt like Marie had given me permission to get rid of extras or things that I didn't really like or that I was only storing for sentimental reasons. Once I started I did discover the joy of discarding! I made a commitment to myself to go through every closet, drawer, cabinet, trunk, shelf, and file. I am cleaning out 25 years of stored items and finding things we forgot we had that we can put into use. Along the way I am fixing drawers that don't shut properly and replacing shelves that are no good. Even though most of my clutter was hidden away, being able to organize and give everything a special home of its own is such a happy feeling. For two weeks now I have gone to bed and left for work with everything put away including the dish drainer and dish soap. I am excited every time I walk into my beautiful clean kitchen. This book came into my life at just the right time.
