About the Book

Ignorance is bliss―except in self-awareness.

What you don't know about yourself can hurt you and your relationships―and maybe even how you make your way in the world. It can also keep you in the shallows with God. Do you want help figuring out who you are and why you're stuck in the same ruts?

The Enneagram is an ancient personality type system with an uncanny accuracy in describing how human beings are wired, both positively and negatively. In The Road Back to You Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile forge a unique approach―a practical, comprehensive way of accessing Enneagram wisdom and exploring its connections with Christian spirituality for a deeper knowledge of God and of ourselves.

Funny and filled with stories, this book allows you to understand more about each of the Enneagram types, keeping you turning the pages long after you have read the chapter about yourself. Beginning with changes you can start making today, the wisdom of the Enneagram can help you get on the road that will take you further along into who you really are―leading you into places of spiritual discovery you would never have found on your own, and paving the way to the wiser, more compassionate person you want to become.

About the Reviews

This is a great introduction to the enneagram, an ancient personality tool that you need to know about. Its different from other tools like the Myers-Briggs and this difference is what make it so helpful and so uncomfortable to study. The enneagram doesn't flatter. It provides more than a description of your strengths. You'll also get insight into the unhealthy side of your personality. You'll gain an understanding of how you operate at your best and your worst, which is why I have a love/hate relationship with the enneagram. Expect to be encouraged as you read. Expect to squirm at times as you read descriptions of the darker aspects of your personality that are so spot on, you'll wonder if someone's crawled inside your head and downloaded a few things.

There's a lot of more technical books written on the enneagram but this is probably the most accessible and engaging book on the topic. The writing is excellent and the content is organized in a way that makes the tool easy to understand. The authors write from a Christian perspective but its not heavy handed. I can't imagine someone coming from a different faith or no faith at all feeling "run over" by their perspective.

The things we refuse to face in ourselves often have great power over us. Read this book and allow these gracious authors to gently invite you to a greater level of self-awareness that can lead to greater freedom and greater compassion both for yourself and others.

Although I had already read up on the different types and basic theory of the Enneagram for free online and then explored the exhaustively detailed Riso and Hudson text, none of that quite hit me like The Road Back to You. Ian and Suzanne bring so much character and compassion to their descriptions of the types - with significant suggestions for growing in spiritual/emotional health within your type - that you start to find yourself plotting ways to care for people you've now recognized weren't the horrid beasts you thought they'd always be (including yourself). That's all quite a stretch for a 5, even with a 4 wing. This book functions as both warm and friendly introductory material for newbies and a point of meaningful reconnection and application for the already initiated. Also, Ian has a fun perspective to try on for a bit and some great jokes and stories scattered here and there that add so much life to what could have just been a dry, lifeless typology manual - it's worth the read just for the personality.

*********************************

I have read a lot of books on the Enneagram and this is the best! It's the one that most easily explains the Enneagram and how it can be used as a tool for life. It also goes deep. I wish everybody had to learn the Enneagram...we would be a much healthier society. This is a great book if you are involved in teams or ministry. Would you like more compassion for yourself and others? This is the place to start. I cannot recommend this highly enough. It's an easy read with depth that can be life changing as you work with it. There's work involved...you can't just read this, it has to be a living breathing piece of work in your life.
