Heidi Klum’s Surprise Marriage to Tom Kaulitz Tackles the Fear of Moving On

Positivity
When Heidi Klum and Seal filed for divorce in January 2012, after seven years of marriage, fans were shocked. The pair, who had four children together, seemed like the ultimate dream couple, but as details emerged about their split, it became clear that there were a number of cracks in their foundation. As Klum told Redbook in November 2015, “Obviously things have changed, but they haven’t changed drastically. [Seal] was never your typical dad who left for work in the morning with his briefcase and would be home by dinner time every night,” she told the magazine, elaborating, “He traveled a lot. The kids knew it was part of his job. I’m a mom and a dad at the same time.” That same month, Seal confessed that the couple’s yearly vow renewals, which were always an outlandish, over-the-top affair, had always rubbed him the wrong way.

Brad Pitt is Still Fighting the Ghost of Tyler Durden

Positivity
Brad Pitt has been the prototypical American movie star for decades now. Whether being picked up on a roadside by Thelma & Louise or playing a sensitive but deadly vampire, he’s always been a force to be reckoned with, a force of great power and sensual energy combined with magnetism. No more was this the case than when Pitt played Tyler Durden, the antagonist of David Fincher’s Fight Club. In his most iconic role, Pitt satirically embodied the point where idealized masculinity turns destructive.Despite the movie being a deconstruction of toxic masculinity, both Durden and his portrayed have been held up as the embodiment of an almost cartoonish hyper-masculinity for years since the film’s release.

Lizzo’s Journey From Rock Bottom to Radical Positivity

Positivity
If you don’t know Lizzo already, you’re about to. There’s a very good reason AfroPunk has dubbed the future icon “the star we need right now.”The uber-talented 31-year old singer, rapper, and classically trained flautist (no joke) is becoming more and more recognized for her unique and delicious sound. Plus— she’s a bad-ass, body positive, big, black woman who’s not afraid to spread a powerful message of empowerment and self-love.Take, for example: her recent number one hit “Truth Hurts”, which she released nearly two years before it finally hit the top of the charts. The song is an infectious anthem about loving yourself even when others mistreat you — of never letting other people hurt your sense of self-worth.

How to Handle Being the One Friend Who Doesn’t Have Kids

Positivity
Pretty much everyone close to me has kids now. It wasn’t a gradual development, either.I’ve always had a strong group of friends (mostly women), and when we hit our mid-thirties, none of us had any kids yet, with no signs of that changing on the horizon, I thought that was it: we were an anomaly, a rare breed of bad-ass childless wonders, and that was that. But then my best guy friend in the world announced his girlfriend was pregnant, and today they’re a family of four.Within a year of my best friend’s announcement, one of my closest girlfriends decided she didn’t want to be the only person in her family without children, and the next thing we knew, she was expecting.A year after she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, another friend in our tight knit group who’d been married a while but was convinced she couldn’t get pregnant naturally, suddenly did! We were all over the moon. Her baby boy was born almost two years ago.

Plan to save LA’s mountain lions – with a big bridge

Positivity
Officials in California are planning an $87m bridge across a 10-lane highway to allow wildlife a safe crossing between sections of the Santa Monica Mountain range close to Los Angeles. For the region’s endangered mountain lions, this means more freedom to roam – and more mountain lions to mate with.A study published in 2019 found the big cats were at risk of extinction in southern California within 50 years if their genetic diversity was not increased. Along with other wildlife in the region like coyotes, deer and snakes, mountain lions have been restricted from wandering by the busy highways that feed Los Angeles, which has limited their mating prospects. The bridge, now in its final design phase and slated for completion in 2023, will offer animals safe passage across Highway 101 and has received a reported $13m in private donations.

50 Years After Their Love Was Torn Apart by Racism, They’re Finally Married

Positivity
When love is real, it can overcome any barrier — even if it takes five decades.Way back in 1967, high school students Howard Foster and Myra Clark fell in love. But because of the social climate at the time – and because Howard is black and Myra is white – their love ran into a seemingly insurmountable obstacle.Interracial marriages had only recently become legal — the landmark Loving v. Virginia case ruled that Mildred (a black woman) and Richard (a white man) Loving could not be imprisoned for getting married in June of 1967 — and there were often race-related riots outside their high school.Though he loved her, Howard was afraid rampant racism would hurt their relationship — and endanger Myra.

Once such a couple breaks up, everyone is hungry for all the spicy details that led to the separation.Take, for example, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, who met and fell in love on the set of the movie Days of Thunder.“He basically swept me off my feet. I fell madly, passionately in love”, she told Vanity Fair in 2002, and Tom was just as love-struck as she was. They were clearly into each other. Nicole’s excitement for her husband was obvious. They wanted to quickly start a family so the couple adopted two children in the ’90s — their daughter Isabella and son Connor, and enjoyed being parents before they got divorced in 2001.

How I Learned To Cope With Eco-Anxiety and Climate Despair

Turns out there are many ways to describe this condition, be it “eco-anxiety,” “climate anxiety,” or “climate despair. Whatever you want to call it, there is no denying that it is real. No, there is no official clinical definition for it yet, but it is not surprising that the phenomenon is on the rise considering the collective, growing awareness of the environmental crisis we are facing.

Healing From Trauma Can Be Fun — Here’s How I Did It

Positivity
These are all real statements that I was confronted with while looking for a coach to help me overcome the trauma of a past abusive relationship. All I heard was that in order to heal, I was going to have to accept that it would be difficult, challenging, and painful. And that was the last thing I wanted. At the time I was in a new healthy relationship but all of the PTSD from my ex was coming right back up and wreaking havoc on my life. I honestly feared I was going to lose my boyfriend because of my own toxicity. Despite that fear, I sure as hell didn’t feel brave enough to open up all my wounds and experience all my pain all over again. I was already doing that on a daily basis. The rhetoric I was hearing was only reinforcing my fear

Working memory capacity is the key to successfully dealing with relationship problems

Positivity
Recent research has shined a light on the possibility of cognitive ability having an effect on romantic relationships in a rather substantial way.The aforementioned study has concluded that a better ‘working memory capacity’ is tightly connected to the observable decrease in seriousness and extremity in relationship problems. In the words of Levi R. Baker who is the co-author of the study, as well as an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and an associate editor for Personal Relationships:  “I’ve been interested in relationship problem solving for quite some time. Just about every relationship encounters problems from time to time, but it is how people resolve those problems that determines whether their relationships are satisfying and lasting.”

7 helpful ways to alleviate the daily struggles of depression

Positivity
Important disclaimer: Depression is a mental disorder which should not by any means be taken lightly. It consists of a spectrum of differentiating forms and is a highly individual matter. For instance, clinical depression is a more severe form which is not to be confused with less acute forms of such.Furthermore, depression must not be mistaken with widespread feelings of sadness or grief (such as after experiencing loss of a loved one, for example), as they are very different. It is not advisable to practice ‘self-diagnosing’. However, one should seek mental health help from a professional when/if in need of such. Lastly, this article is meant to provide helpful tips to alleviate weaker, more general symptoms of (milder) depression.

30 things all women absolutely want and expect from men

Positivity
The great question that has never been answered, and which I have not yet been able to answer, despite my thirty years of research into the feminine soul, is ‘What does a woman want?’ – Sigmund FreudThe great question that has never been answered, and which I have not yet been able to answer, despite my thirty years of research into the feminine soul, is ‘What does a woman want?’ – Sigmund FreudWhen we don’t talk about our periods and how nasty they are, most of the time girls talk about guys. Be it from facebook, someone from school or university, and even a man we’ve seen only once on the street, …we talk about guys, a lot. I honestly can’t remember even one time when I haven’t spoken with my  friends about men. And almost every time  our discussions end with the conclusion that men are from Mars and women from Venus. Or in other words, we are so very different, that sometimes it’s tough to get along with each other and to understand each other correctly.

The perfect recipe: from Pakistan to Manchester

Positivity
Shamim Ali, pictured above, worked for years as a teacher back in her native Pakistan, helping students with their Urdu and Islamic studies. Married at 15, she later moved to Italy and then to the UK for her children, eventually settling in Manchester.Ali went from being a busy professional to “just a housewife” and admits to spending most of her time at home in the inner-city area of Longsight. “I like the English language, it’s very beautiful,” she said, “but I can’t read it. I can speak English, but I have no confidence.”Ali was therefore understandably nervous when she was asked to present and explain – in English rather than her first tongue, Urdu – one of her dishes, during a demonstration session at Levenshulme Old Library.

Can you solve Einstein’s riddle?

Positivity
The riddle below is considered to be written by Albert Einstein when he was a young boy, however, some have also credited Lewis Carol for its existence in the past.Nonetheless, there is no concrete evidence either one of the two wrote it in actuality, but it is acknowledged as immensely clever and is known as “Einstein’s Riddle” in popular culture. So, we’re going to stick to that.“Einstein’s Riddle” is a form of a Zebra Puzzle in which you are given a series of facts and are challenged with the task to logically calculate one single fact (which is not offered in the previously mentioned ones). In this specific instance, it’s the location of a fish that has been kidnapped. There are five indistinguishable houses in a row (numbered, respectively, one through five), and the fish is in one of them. Can you deduce which house contains the fish, with only the clues provided?

University ditches beef to beat climate change

Positivity
Students returning to Goldsmiths, University of London, this autumn will notice beef dishes missing from menus. The university in south London has decided to ban the red meat in a bid to become carbon neutral by 2025. Students will also have to pay a 10p levy on bottles and single-use plastic cups.“Declaring a climate emergency cannot be empty words,” said Professor Frances Corner (pictured), the new warden of Goldsmiths. The move has been criticised by farmers, who claim British beef is reared more efficiently than it is overseas. However, many scientists believe reducing red meat consumption will help humanity mitigate the impact of climate change.Image: Professor Frances Corner OBE, warden of Goldsmiths, photographed by Ben Queenborough

How to break the ice – the inspiring way

Positivity
You straighten up your name badge. In your other hand, a small coffee cup wobbles on its saucer. You pick out a friendly looking face and make your approach.“So. What do you do?”It might be a safe way to start a conversation at a networking event, but it’s about as exciting as the mini-croissant buffet on the way in. So why do we often limit ourselves to asking what someone’s job is? Finding out about passions and pastimes is what should, in fact, be top of the agenda for any savvy networker.“You never know what people do outside of their career profile,” says Steven Miller, head of partnerships at the networking app Shapr. “I like meeting people from industries I don’t know and sometimes this opens doors that I never thought about.”

What lies beneath: can the subterranean world show us how to be better citizens?

Positivity
— Underland is your first book to focus on the world ‘below’, from caves to catacombs. Why take us there?I have devoted my writing life to trying to celebrate and diversify the relationships we have with the world beyond the human. Underland is the darkest book I have ever written but it is also full of wonder and hope. It celebrates the possibility of rich relations with the more-than-human world. For years, I have travelled to the deepest parts of the world beneath our feet, and rarely felt as far from the human realm as when 10 metres below it. One of the large subjects of the book is claustrophobia, which we’re experiencing as a species. Every move we make seems only to wriggle us tighter into our trap, and so I became fascinated by claustrophobia’s power.
