‘Community ownership is key to the survival of Britain’s high streets’ – report
Positivity

The sight of boarded-up shops has become an increasingly common one on Britain’s high streets, and the Covid-19 pandemic places many more businesses at risk. A report commissioned by the independent trust Power to Change and released this week suggests that community access and ownership of key buildings on the UK’s thousands of high streets could be pivotal to their future survival.Saving the High Street: the community takeover, by the London School of Economics and Political Science, outlines how fragmented property ownership, a lack of transparency about who owns high street buildings and absentee landlords, with no vested interest in local places, are all barriers to successfully regenerating high streets.

How To Combat Body Image Issues Without Actually Changing Your Body
Positivity

When coronavirus lockdown and social restrictions were announced in Germany, my first reaction was that it wouldn’t cause a huge change to my lifestyle. I have a fairly simple life, I work as a freelancer in my home office and cafes, I spend lots of time in solitude and my social calendar is fairly low-profile. Yes, I’d miss the small things that are part of my routine, but this was a good excuse to deepen my meditation practice and step-up for those in need of emotional support. Then it dawned on me: the gym’s closed. My sacred space between the dumbbells and the squat racks, out of bounds, for months. There may appear to be a conflict for a meditation teacher and coach who emphasizes our identity is not linked to the body. Whilst I’d love to profess I knew I’d miss the gym exclusively for the mental health benefits (of which there are many) I also knew it was going to challenge my relationship with my body, a familiar foe from the past.

Why Jonah Hill Lived In Shame For So Long—And How He Freed Himself
Positivity

When most of us think of Jonah Hill, we think of funny movies. Indeed, his early films were the ones I first saw, and, as it happens, they were the ones that stuck in my mind. From his debut in I ♥ Huckabees, to Superbad , Knocked Up, andGet Him to the Greek (among many others), he has delivered us reliably from seriousness. But in spite of Jonah’s mountain of successes, he has struggled with the best of us: namely, low self-esteem stemming from body shaming, a phenomenon he’s experienced most of his life. Turns out it’s not only women who are held to impossibly high standards: they apply to everyone, and it’s always damaging. Jonah, 36, started acting when he was young, leaving him wide open to public criticism about his body, an experience shared by many child actors who don’t exactly fit the mold of conventional attractiveness. Jonah has been vocal about how working on his directorial debut, Mid90s (2018), helped him to reflect on this for the first time. Mid90s is about a 13-year-old wannabe skateboarder just trying to fit in.

Serena Williams Proves You Don’t Have To Change Anything About Yourself To Find Love
Positivity

Serena Williams is more than a tennis extraordinaire. In the last few years, she has emerged as one of the most empowering, inspiring, and confident women of our time. It’s not just her impeccable and unprecedented records on the court that have made her a downright champion; it’s the way she continues to motivate millions of women around the world and encourages them to be proud of who they are and to never stop striving for the best. While it’s quite natural to admire her as a woman and as a tennis player, it’s equally necessary to keep in mind that Serena Williams in fact is not a superhuman. In many ways, she’s just like you and me. She has won countless titles over the decades but she’s also a wife, a mother, and a woman doing her best in the face of criticism and adversity.

New issue of Positive News features projects giving young people of colour a voice
Positivity

When I was little, my favourite books were the Meg and Mog series. I loved them so much that when my little brother was born, he arrived bearing two new tomes in order to win me over. As I got older, I graduated to the works of Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton.Pretty much any book I picked had characters that looked like me. Though things are changing, it is a privilege not readily afforded to black children or their parents, when hunting for reading material that contains families that look like theirs. This is part of the reason why Samantha Williams, one of three cover stars for the new issue of Positive News magazine, began her venture, This is Book Love. Williams brings inclusive books into schools and community centres, so that no matter where children, their parents or grandparents hail from, they can see themselves reflected in books’ pages.

Self-care is a simple concept in theory. It comes down to any activity we do in order to protect our mental, emotional, and physical health. Self-care can be anything from taking some time to watch a movie, get a haircut, exercise or get a medical check-up. Sadly, due to the nature of our busy lives, taking care of one’s self has become an option or even a luxury. We push ourselves to the point of exhaustion by dedicating all of our time and energy to anything else but taking care of ourselves — and that only leads to burnout.Does “I can’t seem to catch a break!” sound familiar to you? The truth is life’s not going to give you any breaks. You’ll have to take them yourself and “recharge” so you can continue chasing your goals or look after others.

Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo Had to Break Up to Realize They Were Meant to Be

Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo are one of Hollywood’s sweetest couples — just take a look at their Instagram feeds and you’ll see them unabashedly exchanging words of love — which makes the fact that they actually broke up before getting engaged seriously surprising. But as the Maroon 5 frontman and Victoria’s Secret model show us, sometimes, you really do need to part ways to see how much you truly want (and need) to be together. Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo technically crossed paths for the first time in 2011 when they both worked on that year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. While Adam performed with Maroon 5, Behati worked the runway, but nothing came of it. Adam was dating another Victoria’s Secret model, Anne Vyalitsyna, at the time, which just goes to show that the right timing can be everything. Spoiler: When the two met for real a year later, sparks flew.
