When Your Co-Star Is 20 Feet Tall And Weighs 2000 Pounds

Lifestyle
Several years ago when Christiani Pitts first heard about the concept of bringing King Kong to Broadway she was working as restaurant hostess in her “survival job.” She had read an article about the show’s production in Australia. She was flummoxed, intrigued but also excited about the prospect of seeing this show on Broadway. “I thought, this is insane and fascinating. How are they going to do that? And how incredible that we are in a world where technology allows that.” At the time she was trying to launch her performing career. “I just never ever thought that I would be able to play the character of Ann Darrow.”But years later after she had made her Broadway debut in the show A Bronx Tale she got another big surprise: an appointment to audition for King Kong. “My jaw dropped. Who would have thought it would happen all these years later?,” she says....

Meet AlpinStash's Prolific Breeder And Cultivator Danny Murr-Sloat

Lifestyle
Danny Murr-Sloat is shaking the luxury cannabis market by breeding and cultivating his own select cultivars— AlpinStash OriginalsLemmiwinks,Sparrow King, Falkor, Grape Grimoire, and Platinum Tiger Cookies— in a fashion that is uniquely his own. Danny is both intriguing and pragmatic. His methodology is organic in procedure, with some very special techniques added that he happily shares with his fellow growers. I was immediately impressed that Danny is not “Chasing THC,” which I believe is the downfall to the cannabis industry. After I had my cannabis DNA tested, I realized that the “Chasing THC” theory is flawed. My body, and that of many others, should not be using only high THC cultivars. Low THC and a balance of THC/CBD is far healthier, when growing medically applicable cannabis. Danny has forged his own path, impressing Colorado's cannabis connoisseurs. In this interview, he discusses indoor growing and the lack of a traditional terroir. I think his answer to indoor cultivation is brilliant, and it shows that flavor and quality shine through in their own, intimate manner. AlpinStash is raising the bar towards an even more visually pleasing, flavorful and aromatically driven cannabis. One of my main concerns with indoor growing is the lack of individuality, but AlpinStash retains all the visceral characteristics of hand-tended, luxury cannabis, and then adds their own individuality—their own signature. Luxury cannabis has never tasted so good! Now, without further adieu, may I present the founder of revered micro-cultivation brand AlpinStash. Please allow me the pleasure of sharing with you, Danny Murr-Sloat....

Air Carrier British Midland Regional Files For Bankruptcy, Blames Brexit

Lifestyle
British Midland Regional or bmi, a regional carrier serving two dozen destinations throughout Europe and the United Kingdom, filed for bankruptcy and administration on Saturday, following a tough season for air carriers across the continent. In a statement posted to the company's homepage, the airline blamed Brexit for many of its woes, saying "the airline has faced several difficulties, including recent spikes in fuel and carbon costs, the latter arising from the EU’s recent decision to exclude UK airlines from full participation in the Emissions Trading Scheme. These issues have undermined efforts to move the airline into profit. Current trading and future prospects have also been seriously affected by the uncertainty created by the Brexit process, which has led to our inability to secure valuable flying contracts in Europe and lack of confidence around bmi’s ability to continue flying between destinations in Europe. Additionally, our situation mirrors wider difficulties in the regional airline industry which have been well documented."...

Vacheron Constantin's Twin Beat Perpetual Calendar Reinvents Mechanical Watchmaking

Lifestyle
The Vacheron Constantin Twin Beat is one of the biggest innovations in mechanical watchmaking to come along in awhile. It contains two separate, yet linked movements that operate at different frequencies, and here’s why: The slower the frequency of the escapement in a mechanical movement, the more vulnerable it is to external disturbances that can affect its performance. Yet the higher the frequency, the more power reserve it uses, and the more wear and tear it will impose on movement components. Vacheron Constantin solves the problem with a dual frequency movement with two balances, one for when you’re wearing it, oscillating at 36,000 beats per hour (5 Hz), and the other for when you take it off oscillating at 8,640 vph (1.2 Hz) which continues to keep time, but without draining the power reserve or wearing down the movement. In 1.2 Hz mode, the watch has a potential 65-day power reserve – the average is 42 hours. The standard frequency, by the way, is 28,800 beats per hour, or 3 Hz, a spot somewhere in the middle of these two options. The movement, caliber 3610QP, was designed from scratch to optimize the power reserve, including a sprung dual-gear compound system that requires four times less torque required for the jumping indications for the date, month and leap year....

New Report: UK Consumers Want More Organic Everything

Lifestyle
The Soil Association has reported this week on how current consumer trends in health and sustainability are rapidly driving the organic sector in the UK — almost £45 million a week is spent on organic products. The newly released 2019 Organic Market report demonstrates how products branded as organic are becoming the go-to products for the healthy, the environmental and the socially conscious. The last decade has seen a huge increase in the demand for more ethical and environmentally friendly food options such as free range chicken and eggs due to concerns over chicken welfare in captivity. Now, consumer awareness is extending even further. Customers are now much more aware of the practice of chick culling for instance, where male chicks are routinely killed upon hatching because they can’t lay eggs and it isn’t economically viable to look after them until they are old enough to eat. There are obvious consumer knock-on effects — the first no-kill eggs have just gone on the market in Germany through a process which identifies the sex of the egg before hatching, meaning that only female hens are allowed to hatch to rear chicks....

Archaeologists Make 'Very Special' Viking Era Discovery in Norway

Lifestyle
Almost one thousand years after the end of the Viking Age, Norwegian archaeologists have made a sensational find near Halden in the south-east of Norway. The burial mound and adjacent field harbour several longhouses and at least one ship burial.Digital data visualizations reveal the well-defined 20-meter-long ship-shaped structure, with indications that the lower part is well preserved. Incredibly, the ship lies just below the topsoil, with just 50cm separating it from the fresh air.The discovery was made quite by accident when a local farmer wanted to dig ditches to solve an ongoing drainage problem in a boggy field. In previous years trenches in the area had turned up items of interest, so archaeologists from Østfold county decided to try a non-intrusive method of analysis before giving the work the go-ahead....

Big Brand Food Shopping Just Got More Expensive In France

Lifestyle
The French government has introduced sweeping measures to shake up the food sector. They are designed to help smaller producers but might also impact heavily upon shoppers who buy big brand names. There are three major changes. Firstly, from January 1st 2019, retailers can no longer discount products for more than 34% of their retail price. This should put an end to the huge reductions which supermarkets often use to attract customers. Last year, leading French supermarket Intermarché reduced the price of Nutella by 70% resulting in stampedes and fights across the country as customers rushed to buy up large amounts. Secondly, from March 2019, the amount of promotions which are allowed will be limited to just a quarter of the planned sales. So if a supermarket wants to sell 100 tubs of Nutella, from March, it can only run promotional offers on 25 of them. ‘Buy one, get one free’ offers are now a thing of the past. Big brand names will likely have to work harder to keep customers faithful....

Namibia is the second least densely populated place in the world. This is obvious at first sight. An Interview With: Kim Rael, CEO Of Inventive CBD, and Cannabis Edibles Brand, Azuca

Lifestyle
I sat with Kim Rael for a few minutes at the Seed to Sale Show, held up in Boston, a couple days ago. I could immediately see the potential of her company, in between talking about everything else but her company. And then I forgot to give Kim my business card. That's not like me, sorry Kim! At any rate, I was conversing with Tom Weihmayr of the Toronto Drink Factory about flavors, the potential for flavor driven products like cannabis in beverages and the like. A flash of inspiration put a light bulb into my head, and it led me back into my recent chat with Kim Rael. Why not take this thing called cannabis and spread the philosophy and medicinal benefits around the globe? Why not indeed? Which brings me back to the conversation that enjoyed with Kim. She's whip smart, that's immediately obvious, and I saw her mind working, always thinking of the next sentence carefully before putting the words into the air. Kim is a studied business-minded visionary. A deeply pragmatic, highly talented business woman who is a force for change. Becoming CEO of a major corporation in the cannabis field is not usually the role that someone aspires to, especially when it's so risk filled. After all, there are certain regulations in every state, and of course the Federal Government as a bureaucracy to contend with. And of course the 'stigma' which is, quite simply the 900 pound gorilla in the room. That gorilla comes in many formats, be it regulatory, or more simply, the law of the land, or even a disapproving family member. It takes guts to be a success in the cannabis world and Kim Rael is, for all intents and purposes making a massive dent in the veneer of the traditional business model. She is living the experience of a metric-driven entrepreneur, but the successes are far more vital when you are using someone else's money. Sure it's cannabis, and this CEO role, running the top of the house is no less important than a Forbes Fifty list member in traditional business. Because traditional business is about to be overtaken by intellectual superiority and women like Kim Rael, who is going to be very well known. I have every anticipation that Azuca and Inventive CBD will become household names before long. They offer the finest culinary products, that are unlike anything else on the market. Culinarians should be equally charmed with Chef Ron Silver involved in the Culinary equation. Certainly, he is someone who knows his way around flavor, quality, and most importantly, class. These full flavored products that certainly, 'Raise the Bar' in the form of fun, intriguing flavors, and the simplicity of execution. And It's Gone: An Appreciation Of The Airbus A380

Lifestyle
The demise of the Airbus A380 has been all over the news this week. The end of the plane’s production life was perhaps the biggest non-shock in the airline industry. I’ve written a score of articles at Forbes like “Has The End Come For the Airbus A380, Not With A Bang But A Whimper” and more recently, “How To Enjoy An A380 Flight Before They Go Away.”I would occasionally compare the A380 to the rotund American comedian Rodney Dangerfield, in that his punchline was “I don’t get no respect.” This seemed to be the airline industry’s attitude; the A380 was one every passenger wanted to fly, but ultimately, no airline wanted to buy. And it is a sad irony that the A380, a much greater example of European technical and manufacturing wizardry than the Concorde ever was, is being shut down just as the very concept of a united Europe is under assault....

Rocker Dion DiMucci On His Big Hit The Wanderer, Del Shannon

Lifestyle
In Part 1 of our interview series with Dion DiMucci, the rock icon discussed the infamous plane crash in 1959 where The Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly were killed. Here, Dion remembers fondly crooner Del Shannon and talks about the big hit, "The Wanderer."Jim Clash: You once called Del Shannon’s “Runaway” tune an opera. You toured with Del. What are your memories, and did you ever think he would take his own life?Dion DiMucci: Never, never. In fact I was talking to Bobby Vee, who was with him maybe a week and a half before he did that. He said, "Dion, we were driving together through the midwest on this tour and Del looked great, but something was off. When we got to the hotel, I called his room. I knew he was in a program – a 12-step where he knew the principle of talking to another person. I said, 'Del, I’m your friend, you want to talk?' He said, 'No, everything is okay, I’m good. Fox Series 'Proven Innocent' Shines New Spotlight On A Shady Justice System

Lifestyle
The whole premise of Fox's new Friday night drama, Proven Innocent, is that there are plenty of people in jail or who are accused of crimes who are not guilty. They were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, or they were black or Latino, young and dumb, or immigrants lacking proper legal representation. This procedural legal drama - with plenty of gasp-inducing, yet real-life storylines - is a tribute to those people and their fight.Proven Innocent, through the tale of Attorney Madeline Scott (portrayed here by Rachelle Lefevre, who also starred in Twilight,) tells the story of the wrongfully convicted who just so happen to be represented by an attorney who was wrongfully convicted herself. LeFevre's character - along with her brother Levi (Riley Smith) - was jailed at the age of 18 for the murder of her best friend. The District Attorney who put her away, Gore Bellows (portrayed by Kelsey Grammer), is now seeking the position of governor. ...

Agnieszka Holland's 'Mr Jones' Competes At The Berlinale 2019

Lifestyle
Gareth Jones was a Welsh journalist who went to the Soviet Union and discovered the famine and death of millions in Ukraine in 1933. He placed his own life in peril trying to reveal this. Agnieszka Holland’s film Mr Jones, competing this year for the Golden Bear at the Berlinale, shades light unto this man’s extraordinary life. The cinematography in Holland’s film is sheer beauty, particularly in the moments when a ray of light reveals the particles of dust in the air. From the very first instances of the film, the cinematography enhances the tactility of the images. The spectators find themselves in the middle of a sty, as extreme close shots of pigs make us feel the bristles on the pigs’ pink skin. A sense of claustrophobia is felt as the pigs are packed inside the barn with no room to move. In the next shot, a barn is framed amongst a field of dried wheat that are moved like waves by the wind. The camera pans to reveal that this is the view from someone’s window. A man at his typewriter is writing what we can recognize as Animal Farm. The narration from this book will accompany us throughout the film intermittently....

Waging A Valiant Battle, Lawmakers Try To Fix The Pot Banking Problem ... Yet Again

Lifestyle
Finding a bank is one of the biggest challenges facing cannabis businesses. At the root of this problem is the federal illegality. Banks are loath to work with marijuana businesses even if they're in legal states because they don't want to be accused of money-laundering by the government. As a result, many businesses are forced to operate as cash-only enterprises, rendering them prime targets for crime. It’s a maddening catch-22 situation whose only resolution seems to be legalizing marijuana on a federal level. As more states continue to permit medical or recreational pot, combined with the latest Gallup poll finding that a majority of Americans support legalization, the government seems increasingly out of sync with public sentiment....

This Toddler Can Fluently Count To Ten In Six Languages

Lifestyle
How many languages can you count to ten in? One, maybe two? It’s not every day you meet a grown-up person who can easily count to ten in six different languages, let alone a 2-year-old person! Especially in America, where we often don’t start teaching languages until a child is already well past the developmental stage which makes it easiest for them to explore and pick up new languages. That’s why it is such a surprise to be faced with a pint-sized prodigy like Hyla. Hyla is a sweet towheaded girl with a father who is half Serbian and half Hungarian and a mother who thinks it is incredibly important that her daughter learns not only about those languages, but a few others as well. Hyla’s mother has really put in the work to make sure her child is learning and practicing new languages including her father’s native tongues, but also a few others....

Does This Device Really Stop Snoring?

Lifestyle
My poor wife. I snore. Obviously I cannot control it -- other than blowing my nose and using a nasal steroid spray before I fall asleep. Sometimes it works and most of the time it doesn’t. Yep, I’ve tried various breathing strips. My doctor’s tested me for sleep apnea which I thankfully don’t have. But the snoring remains. So I was hopeful when approached by the people at Hupnos. They have a bluetooth-connected mask that you can put on over your eyes and nose. Your nostrils rest on a rubber nosepiece bearing two little air vents. When you snore, it’s supposed to calmly buzz you so that you don’t wake up but you do turn over and disrupt the snoring. The soft mask has wide, adjustable velcro straps on the rear sides, so you can tighten it comfortably around your head. It’s well-padded and actually quite comfortable to wear. And the nosepiece is removable -- I suppose so you can clean it. Plus, it connects with your smartphone which monitors your sleep habits....

Directing A Film Is The Most Fun Ever, Says Jill Soloway

That's because directing is so damned fun, says Jill Soloway, creator of Amazon Studios' award-winning dramedy Transparent and director of the film Afternoon Delight. “A hotel is intrinsically pointless, it is just a shelter for people, who deserve our attention, generosity and consideration.”That quotation, from designer Philippe Starck, is possibly the last thing I ever expected to read in the marketing materials for a luxury hotel. Over the years of my career, I’ve become quite a fan of shelter, attention, generosity and consideration. But now it’s easy to find those things in a design hostel, a pod hotel, a home of a friend or even a stranger’s (surfed-upon) couch. The joy of a luxury hotel is that it’s not necessary. It’s a folly. It’s a flight of fancy. It’s a delight. It makes the world a more magical place. It lets you live a different life, become someone else. Especially a hotel that doesn’t take itself too seriously....

Worldwide Marijuana Conferences Confirm The Business Of Weed Is Officially Legit

Lifestyle
Cannabis is rapidly becoming a global financial concern as nations ranging from the U.S. to Canada to Colombia to Israel — to name just a few — are actively discussing how to best partner up and get in on this economic juggernaut. Those imminent marijuana enterprises worldwide will soon create the industry’s global supply chains, lower costs, and potentially lead to scientific research for the plant as medicine. This month, Colombian cannabis producer Clever Leaves announced that the company is beginning the process of exporting cannabis to Canada for research purposes. That’s a first for both nations. Colombia’s National Narcotics Fund and Health Canada — the government agencies responsible for oversight of the medical cannabis industries in each nation — agreed to the deal to allow import of dry cannabis flower into Canada. It’s very likely that the arrangement was made to eventually aid Canada in its struggles to maintain adequate supplies of product since pot was made recreationally legal there starting October 17, 2018. This week, CEO Terry Booth of Aurora Cannabis Inc. confirmed the issue, telling analysts and investors on an earnings call that he “loses sleep” over the industry’s ability to supply the global cannabis market. “It will be at least five years until we have an oversupply situation,” the Financial Post reported Booth as saying. The recent enterprise between Colombia and Canada could potentially help to solve that situation....

Old Forester Rye: Meet America's Best Value Whiskey

Lifestyle
Fifteen years ago, a whiskey lover could walk into a store and find a plethora of very good to great American whiskey for less than $25. As popularity grew, whiskey price hikes became about as common and popular as a politician lying to constituents. Bottles that were once $28 are now $40. And former $45 bottles are beginning to hover around $100 because, as supply and demand dictates, people will pay a premium for whiskey—even if it’s not worth the money.Nowadays, we veteran whiskey drinkers find ourselves propping something up just because it’s inexpensive when, in reality, we know that many so-called value whiskeys don’t hold a candle to the $75 bottle. Value whiskey is now, sadly, around $40. Hell, truthfully, I’m just excited when a new whiskey is less than my cell phone bill. And oh by the way, whiskey geeks like to complain. You would have expected someone with casinos in their blood, or at least more prominent on their resume than Lui, a Cal-Berkeley trained engineer with no prior gaming experience, to assume Ho’s role and make their company as Macau’s unofficial local champion in its most prominent industry. As Constantine Valhouli, director of research for real estate analytics firm NeighborhoodX put it, things might actually be better for the city without Amazon on the ground.“Everything will be fine, if not even better than under the earlier agreement,” Valhouli said. “This protracted bidding process for Amazon’s HQ2 has felt like a reality show, where the cities are contestants bidding against each other for the privilege of hosting one of the wealthiest companies in the world. A Cemetery For Confederate Statues? A Getty Exhibit Shows How Old Monuments Can Assume New Meanings

Lifestyle
In Grūtas Park, some eighty miles outside of Vilnius, statues of Lenin and Stalin stand proud amidst memorials to the founders of Lithuanian Communism. This 'monument graveyard' is one of several in the former Soviet Union, repositories of cast-off icons of toppled regimes that now commemorate past violence and oppression. The repurposing of monuments is not limited to Eastern Europe or the 20th century. A timely exhibit at the Getty Research Center reveals the potential for old symbols to take on new meanings, and for those meanings to be more potent on account of their history. The archetype is the obelisk. When Augustus Caesar wanted to flaunt his victory over Cleopatra, and signify the predominance of the Roman Empire, he had one transported from Egypt to Rome. Nearly sixteen hundred years later, when Pope Sixtus V rebuilt the Vatican, he moved an obelisk from the Circus of Nero to the front of St. Peter's Basilica, declaring the preeminence of Catholicism. In both cases, it would have been simpler to erect a new monument, taller than the original or altogether different. Yet both Augustus and Sixtus recognized that the greatest impact was in the narrative of relocation. Like the spoils of war, the obelisk signified the power to possess it....

That New Organic Study Doesn't Really Show Lower Pesticide Levels

Lifestyle
A new study claims an organic diet can significantly reduce pesticide levels, but the research doesn’t hold up. Published February 12 in the journal Environmental Research, the authors of the study tested pesticide levels in the urine of 16 study participants, before and after switching to an organic diet, and found pesticide levels decreased after the switch. But there’s more to the story. The study primarily tested for the kinds of pesticides allowed in conventional agriculture, and not the pesticides allowed on organic farms. So what the study actually shows is fairly obvious: people won’t flush out what they aren’t eating. The researchers did not, for the most part, test for organic pesticides (and when they did, they found higher levels in the organic diet), so it’s not a meaningful comparison of organic and conventional pesticide exposure. The study also doesn’t say anything about whether there’s a health risk associated with conventional pesticide residues, since the mere presence of a chemical in urine isn’t necessarily an unhealthy or dangerous sign....

French Start-Up Misterb&b Targets LGTBQ Travel Market

Lifestyle
Like many great start-up ideas, misterb&b was born out of frustration.Founder and entrepreneur Matthieu Jost was upset and disappointed. He had applied as a guest to a short-term rental in Barcelona and was rejected for being gay.He found different accommodation in the city but the experience still stung. When he was departing the Catalan city, he vowed to his partner that he would never be in that situation again. Furthermore, he never wanted anyone from his community to be rejected for their sexual orientation while traveling. The concept for misterb&b was born.“It's not just about feeling safe. It’s about not [having to] disclose that you are gay when you are,” said Jost. “It’s crazy that we are in 2019 and we still need to give that private information to book a short-term rental.”...

Along with Muriel, we discover that he has converted to the Muslim faith. She finds him praying amongst the cherry trees that are in blossom. The Plane That Never Should Have Been Built: The A380 Was Designed For Marketplace Failure

Lifestyle
Blame it on testosterone, of which there’s always been an over-abundance in the aircraft design and manufacturing world, or on national (or in the case of the multi-nation European company Airbus “Continental”) pride and political grandstanding. Blame it on out-sized executive or corporate egos – something of which, again, that’s never been lacking in the aviation world. But whatever you choose to blame it on – and there are plenty more options to pick from than just the four mentioned above – the A380 superjumbo airplane that Airbus said on Thursday it will stop making amounts to a giant “I told you so” moment. Only the “I” in that phrase does not refer to any one person; far from it....

Experts Weigh In On Salmon Sperm, A Buzzy New Beauty Ingredient

Lifestyle
Back in 2018, Sandra Bullock made headlines when she raved about her beloved “penis facial.” Perhaps she’d be a fan of another buzzy beauty trend having a moment right now: salmon sperm. It’s long been reported that eating salmon is great for your skin. But salmon sperm might be the secret to a youthful complexion. Before you let your imagination run wild, just know that we’re not about to tell you to slather fresh fish sperm all over your face. We’re actually referring to the DNA harvested from salmon sperm, which has been making its way into the world of luxury skin care.Like many of the buzzy ingredients that keep popping up in the beauty world (see also: snail secretions and baby foreskin stem cells), salmon sperm DNA gained popularity in Korea thanks to its supposed ability to help with cell repair and regeneration (more on that later). According to an article published online by T Magazine: Singapore, a salmon sperm DNA facial treatment called Rejuran Skin Healer has been available in South Korea for about four years....

'Ich War Zuhause, Aber...': Angela Schanelec's New Film 'I was At Home But...' At The Berlinale 2019

Lifestyle
There is a moment in Angela Schanelec’s film Ich War Zuhause, Aber… (I was at home, but…) when the protagonist Astrid erupts into the teacher’s lounge at her son’s school and tries to explain her son’s behavior. She says that he is in the state of becoming and being a man at the same time. How strange, she remarks, that no word exists for becoming and being. This is what Schanelec’s film tries to capture, the fact that we are but that we are ever changing at the same time.Part of what has been coined the Berlin School (Berliner Schule), Schanelec’s cinema is predicated in the use of long takes and experimentations with narrative. Her new film is no different. If you’re into fast action movies, this film may not be entirely your cup of tea, but you should at least give it a try. This is a film that stays with you long after viewing it, no matter how many other films you watch afterwards....

Genevolution - Italian City Looks To Open It's Arms To The World After Recent Bridge Tragedy

Lifestyle
This last September during an unusually warm mid-morning, 43 names were read aloud echoing across the main Piazza De Ferrari Square in Genoa, Italy. Respectful applause was mixed with women and men quietly in tears and made for a somber mood at the 30-day memorial of the bridge collapse that killed 43 people. The Prime Minister of Italy, Giuseppe Conte, was greeted with some rumblings of skepticism as he promised to bring quick national aid and repairs. He was followed by Genoa Mayor Marco Bucci who was met with light accord as he spoke somberly, with words of humility and hope. Finally, opera singer Fabio Armiliato lifted morale as he closed the memorial with the operatic words .The one-month memorial was a chance to see Genoans come together and demonstrate the Ligurian strength and resilience that they are known for. Mayor Bucci expressed hopes that this timeless city will move forward wisely. Genoa is often overlooked as a city but the recent bridge collapse tragedy allows it a rare chance to rebuild, destruction can be the mother of creation....

This Seaside Hotel Is Celebrating Valentine's Day With Love Song-Inspired Cocktails

Lifestyle
Maybe you aren't celebrating Valentine's Day with someone special this year, but you can still celebrate with a My Funny Valentine, or a Crazy Little Thing Called Love, or, if you're looking for something a little less permanent, a Strangers In The Night. This month, Vanderbilt Inn, an exclusive boutique hotel in Newport, Rhode Island, has an entire menu of cocktails inspired by classic love songs. It's one way the hotel is celebrating the Month of Love, as they're calling it, which also includes a Valentine's Weekend of Love and a cocktail soiree celebrating all things romance.Joshua Farman, the hotel's food and beverage restaurant manager, designed all of the cocktails around a citrus profile, creating a list of winter cocktails that defy all expectations of what winter cocktails should taste like. Take My Breath Away, made with kaffir lime vodka, Fernet, aromatic tonic and lime, is an earthier and more warming take on an Aperol Spritz. The Always and Forever, made with mandarin blossom vodka, butterfly pea, lavender and prosecco, tastes like a breath of spring, and is a reminder that the season is just around the corner, even if it doesn't feel that way in the middle of February. The Power of Love - a total showstopper that's brought to you in a glass smoker and smoked tableside with hickory chips - includes coffee-infused Campari and barrel-aged gin....

Rock Icon Dion Recalls 1959 Plane Crash That Killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens And The Big Bopper

When I called rock legend Dion DiMucci for an interview recently, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. When he answered the phone “Yo,” I thought of his tough-guy roots in Bronx gangs singing doo-wap on stoops. What would he be like? A macho guy like in his hit song, "The Wanderer?"Truth is, Dion is a sensitive, funny person with stories. I mean real stories. Now 79, his memory is sharp and vivid. For an hour and a half, we discussed his seasoned career. Who in real life is Runaround Sue, The Wanderer? What does Dion think about the British rock invasion of the early sixties? What does he remember about Del Shannon? How does he feel as the guy who gave his seat to Ritchie Valens when that plane crashed killing Valens, The Big Bopper and Buddy Holly en route to a gig in Fargo, ND, on Feb. 3, 1959?...

Chicago Police Slam Media Reports That Jussie Smollett's Attack Was A 'Hoax'

Lifestyle
Ever since Jussie Smollett appeared on Good Morning America to provide the details concerning his Chicago attack, Chicago news outlets have been buzzing about the case. The reports seemingly multiplied by the hour, with one station stating that a source told them that Smollett was involved in a hoax and the attackers included at least one fellow Empire actor. Another report said the persons of interest identified in a video included an actor who appeared on Empire. But shortly after those stories took the nation by storm, Chicago police brass announced on Twitter that the hoax reports were wrong. Here's what CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said:Empire airs on Fox, and that network quickly debunked the suggestion that the actor's character was being written off the series. This is important because being "written off the show" was offered as a reason, by some media reports, for claiming the attack upon Smollett was not real. Separately, 20th Century Fox weeks ago offered their full support of the star....

Will Trump's Wall Solve Our Immigration Problems?

Lifestyle
It looks like President Trump is going to go ahead with building a border wall with Mexico no matter what. The main immigration argument has been that there are 11 million illegal immigrants in America that don't belong here and until we secure the border, we cannot reform immigration laws. That may be something to consider at the moment. Not long ago, Edward H. Kaplan and Jonathan S. Feinstein, two professors at the Yale School of Management, completed a study that found that there are, not just 11 million, but most likely 20 million unlawfully present immigrants in the United States. When I asked them why their numbers differ so greatly from the broadly accepted 11 million illegal aliens number, they said,...

Here's What Happened At The 3rd Annual Taste Of Mexico Festival in Tulum

Lifestyle
If you’ve not heard of the Taste of Mexico Tulum Food, Spirits and Wine Festival (TOM), now you have. The third annual iteration of the weeklong event concluded on Sunday, February 10, 2019, leaving a group of food lovers tired, sated and marking their calendars for 2020.Tulum is one of Mexico’s hippest destinations, especially for the yoga/bohemian set and Instagram/influencer models and their groupies. It’s also an appealing retirement destination for American expats; outside the tourist-crazed beach zone, cost of living eases into the manageable realm. Curiously, those communities didn’t collide throughout the week. Though the festival held events in several of Tulum’s Instagram-friendliest hotels, starting with the brutalist/concrete blocks of Casa Malca, a former Pablo Escobar property, to the Hip Hotel, site of heaving beachfront crowds devouring tacos by day, the patrons of the festival were largely well-behaved expat retirees who had never heard of Friday nights at Gitano’s. This information proves relevant only if you’re hoping your dinner crew will carry on until 7 AM at Papaya Playa. Of course, you’re welcome to go after but not likely with your festival companions....

Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate love. And what could be more romantic than scoring a special Valentine’s Day travel deal to spend with your special squeeze? But finding deals, like finding love, requires determination, a lesson that can be learned from that romantic classic ANIMAL HOUSE.When things looked blackest for the men of Delta House, when administrators “confiscated everything, even the stuff we didn't steal,” did they give up? No! Instead, they screamed “Road trip!” As philosopher-king Bluto put it.“When the going gets tough..The tough gets goin'”Something similar seems to happen at Norwegian Air. Have A Heart: Harry Winston Avenue Classic Sweet Valentine Watch

Lifestyle
Though the familiar heart symbol, ubiquitous on St. Valentine’s Day, has been used for centuries, its connotation as a symbol of love didn’t become popular in Europe until the 16th century. And Harry Winston is embracing the design in its new quartz Avenue Classic Sweet Valentine ladies timepiece. The Avenue Collection is a classic in its own time, taking its design cues from Harry Winston’s historic Fifth Avenue Flagship Salon in New York. The elegant architecture of the rectangular 18-karat white gold case (21.4 mm x 36.1 mm) echoes the stately stone façade of the Fifth Avenue Salon, and it features semblances of the supporting arches that frame the entrance. The top arch features a 0.08 carat heart-shaped ruby, and a 0.03 carat brilliant-cut ruby is set in the crown. You’ve probably heard of menopause, commonly known as the point at which a person’s menstrual cycle stops for good. But it might surprise you that many symptoms that occur during menopause actually begin a lot earlier, during a phase called perimenopause. Perimenopause refers to the time period when people start noticing inconsistency in their menstrual cycle, up until menopause actually begins. Menopause technically starts when someone has gone 12 months without a period. According to Nanette Santoro, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Colorado and a menopause researcher, “the transition is marked by either a seven day or more increase in variability in your cycle length, or a skipped menstrual period.”...

After a week of convincing my partner to make me soup and tea, and laying in the bed lazily, I got better without any real medicine. But even though there’s no curefor the common cold, there are ways to boost your immune system. A stronger immune system means that your body can heal more quickly, and you’re less susceptible to illness in the first place. One all-natural immune system booster that’s popular in earthy circles is fire cider....

A Tale Of Two Premium Cycling Brands: Assos Vs. Rapha

Lifestyle
There's a duopoly in premium cycling apparel. This is just my opinion, of course. And it is reflected in the fact that 80% of my road-cycling wardrobe is either Swiss-based Assos or UK-based Rapha. My respective stake in these two brands is roughly equal on a piece-by-piece basis, but the item distribution is not. In other words, each brand has clear strengths when it comes to bib shorts, jerseys, base layers, outer layers and ancillary items like arm warmers and socks. These strengths originate from a combination of technology, design, style and the individual philosophies of the brands themselves. My wardrobe has been curated accordingly. The other 20% is represented by brands like Black Sheep and Pearl Izumi. Plus, there's a Borah kit from Rally UHC Cycling and a Castelli kit from MTN-Qhubeka, the South African WorldTour team that is now Dimension Data. But when I want to maximize performance, comfort and style, I'm almost aways looking to a combination of Assos and Rapha....

I must admit, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy Alita: Battle Angel. I’m unfamiliar with the source material, and the enlarged anime eyes on actress Rosa Salazar came across as silly in the marketing material, if not downright creepy. But the film is, at least on a technical level, astonishing. This is how you do world-building - the rusty, dusty dystopia depicted on screen feels depressingly real, a ruined civilization rebuilt with spare parts, inhabited by cyborgs and street punks.Unfortunately, the tone of the film isn’t quite as dark and gritty as the unhinged universe it depicts; one gets the feeling that truly nasty things are happening in the shadows, offscreen, while we follow a Disney romance that doesn’t quite fit the setting....

First Eyeglasses Now Hearing Aids -- Cutting Out The Brick-And-Mortar Brings Costs Way Down

What do Warbyparker.com and eyebuydirect.com, have in common? They are all in the business of selling eyeglasses through the internet. There are now several other competitors in that space as well, and all claim to massively undercut the brick-and-mortar optometry shops. Buying prescription eyewear online seems relatively straightforward, especially for younger people who not only are more accustomed to using new technology to keep costs down, they most likely have simpler eyeglass prescriptions as well. I think I might try it myself this year.At less than $500., maybe I would be able to afford more than one pair and could change them out based on what color I was wearing that day – cool!Even more exciting: I discovered recently that hearing aids could also be purchased online. That transaction sounded like much more of a challenge, technologically; yet, it was even more appealing to me than online eyewear because the cost of hearing aids is much higher than the cost of glasses.
