Lifestyle
With the only official pride event in the Middle East, and dubbed by some as the gayest city in the world, Tel Aviv is certainly a city that knows how to party inclusively, but it’s also a diverse community working hard to support its LBGTQ members in daily life. This year, the city is welcoming an estimated 250,000 guests for Tel Aviv Pride, a weeklong celebration already underway, and marked with citywide parties and a raucous parade that has doubled in size in recent years, but these headline events are hardly the only LGBTQ topics worth your attention in Tel Aviv. From all-queer art exhibitions on ancient walls to one of the world’s most progressive transgender medicine programs, check out these ways Tel Aviv celebrates and supports its LGBTQ community from grassroots to government during Pride Week and beyond. ...

Switzerland's Bernina Express

Lifestyle
Many travelers have heard of or taken The Glacier Express, an eight hour luxury train that snakes its ways through the Alps from Zermatt to St. Moritz. It is indeed a dramatic journey that ranks among the world’s best. But Switzerland is blessed with other rail trips that are remarkable in their own right. One of them is the Bernina Express, the Rhaetian Railway that runs from Chur, Davos, or St. Moritz in Switzerland to Tirano in Italy. Opened in 1904, parts of it have been named to the UNESCO World Heritage list.I’ve taken this train many times on behalf of National Geographic Expeditions and it’s an incredible excursion. If you begin in Chur, you’ll cross the Landwasser Viaduct, which is 213 feet high and consists of six-curved limestone arches that are as much sculptural as structural. Then it’s onward through the Albula Tunnel as the train winds its way to the old guard lair of St. Moritz. I’m especially partial to the next section of the journey, from St. Moritz past the lovely town of Pontresina, with views of the rapidly receding Morteratsch Glacier, and then through the wide open valley where the Diavolezza ski resort is located. From there, it’s a steady climb over moorland that reminds me of the Scottish Highlands up to two remarkable lakes, Nair (Black) and Bianco (White), which earned their names because of the color of their waters. The black is merely deep and stony, while the white is the result of the glacial silt runoff that is usually cascading from above....

‘Good Omens’ Is Worth Watching, For The Platonic Love Story

Lifestyle
Good Omens, the recent television adaptation of the Neil Gaiman/Terry Pratchett novel, is the most optimistic apocalypse story imaginable, a Romeo and Juliet story without the tragedy. The series is great fun, but somewhat wobbly; the budget doesn’t seem high enough to properly depict the fantastical elements (especially for those spoiled by HBO and Netflix), the acting can be questionable, and the sub-plots meandering. But where the series shines is through the very special friendship shared between the demon Crowley (David Tennant) and the angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen). Two wonderful actors, playing characters who feel trapped by their respective labels, who long to spend some quality time together, away from the judgmental eyes of their angelic/demonic peers. ...

U.K. Transport Secretary Chris Grayling Claims In Parliament That Building Roads Reduces Emissions

Lifestyle
In a question-and-answer session in parliament on June 13 the U.K. Transport Secretary Chris Grayling batted away claims from the official opposition that climate change is an existential threat to our planet, and said that any attempt to row back on road building was tantamount to the Labour Party waging a “war with the motorist.”Mr. Grayling claimed that the “more congested our roads are, the higher the emissions.” And he added:Labour’s Rachael Maskell had asked the Secretary of State why he had “failed to undertake a full environmental audit of [the latest] road investment strategy—the most ecologically and environmentally damaging road building programme for a generation?”...

Review: Leesa's Hybrid Pillow Lets Me Sleep Through The Night Pain-Free

Lifestyle
HuffPost may receive a share from purchases made via links on this page.I pride myself on being a dedicated yogi who aims for an ergonomic work setup that promotes productivity. I also stretch regularly and get massages once in a while — all the makings of a pain-free life. But up until six months ago, I was waking up with aches and pains in my upper back and neck that I couldn’t shake until mid-morning, often needing the help of a heating pad and mild pain killer. That’s when I stumbled upon the Leesa Hybrid Pillow, almost by accident. After reading that you should get a new pillow once every two years — or at least be washing them (which I hadn’t been!) — I realized I was long overdue for a pillow update. I decided it was time to upgrade, since the last time I’d gotten a new pillow I was in my mid-20s, and it was from IKEA. Didn’t I deserve something a little nicer now that I was a full-fledged adult?...

Revisiting The Classics: Getting Reacquainted With Ruffino

Lifestyle
For many of us in the wine business, there is a tendency to constantly seek out the new and the novel at the expense of the familiar. Which makes sense: Most wine professionals taste constantly, and the sheer volume of what we sniff and sip and spit affords us the opportunity to introduce our readers or restaurant guests or clients to a phenomenal range of wines that they may not have had access to before. But there is a risk in predominantly training our gaze on the new: Forgetting about the tried and true, or chalking those wines up as somehow boring, or dismissing the (often unexpected) pleasures that familiar producers, grape varieties, or styles can offer.Don’t get me wrong: There are certainly some producers out there whose strategy is to crank out enough middle-of-the-road wine to fill a proverbial ocean, and plenty of those labels are little more than industrial juice that’s been so over-manipulated as to be unrecognizable as having come from the place-name on the label. These are wines that taste and smell like they could have come from anywhere and nowhere, and whose defining characteristics are often little more than over-ripe fruit, a hint of residual sugar, and an overlay of oak (probably from chips or some other such method)....

Seniors Drive Shift of Cannabis Perceptions Towards Wellness

Lifestyle
Perhaps the greatest challenge facing the movement to legalize cannabis is the need to overcome decades of disinformation proliferated through War on Drugs propaganda. And if the good fight is to be won, it will require a shift in the common perception of cannabis – from dangerous, gateway drug to safe and effective medicine. The prohibition-era re-branding of cannabis as medicine made its first major breakthrough in 1996 with the passage of Proposition 215 – the landmark Compassionate Use Act in California that first introduced “medical marijuana” into the law books. At the time, activist Dennis Person was distributing cannabis to AIDS patients in San Francisco, and voters were convinced that he shouldn’t be prosecuted as a criminal for his humanitarian efforts....

For Health Benefits, Spend At Least A Couple Of Hours Per Week In Nature

Lifestyle
The concept of forest bathing, or shinrin yoku, has gotten a lot of attention in the last few years, as research has suggested that it really does seem to confer health benefits, both mental and physical. A new study in from the University of Exeter tries to home in on how much nature we ought to take in, and finds that 120 minutes seems to be a threshold—but spending more than this amount of time is at least as good for us, too.The study was published this week in Scientific Reports. The researchers looked at data from almost 20,000 people in England, and correlated the time they said they spent in nature—whether in urban green spaces, actual forests, or the beach—with their physical and mental well-being. Spending 119 minutes or less didn’t seem to matter much, but people who got at least 120 minutes/week of nature were more likely to say they were in good health and had greater well-being. More than this amount also helped (i.e., people who got five hours were also in better health/well-being), so don’t think that two hours/week is an optimal dose—it’s just the minimum amount that the authors say showed a clear effect....

Howie’s T-shirt said “Free Dad Hugs.” He walked around the parade and gave out hundreds of hugs throughout the day. A hug may seem like a small gesture, but it was incredibly meaningful for some attendees who had been cut off from their own parents because of their sexuality. “Imagine that your child feels SO LOST FROM YOU that they sink into the arms of a complete stranger and sob endlessly just because that stranger is wearing a shirt offering hugs from a dad,” Howie explained on Facebook. ...

How Entrepreneurs Are Turning Time-Honored Traditions Into Luxury Cannabis Experiences

The mainstreaming of cannabis has pushed the industry to cater to more niche audiences, like…women. Cannabis entrepreneurs are branching out into luxury cannabis experiences to help new and old cannabis consumers see the drug in a new light. On The Quest For Creative Funding Models And Younger Audiences For Opera And Ballet

Lifestyle
To produce canonical works, the arts require risk-taking and innovation, boundary-pushing and stirring up new ideas. Of course, the arts are also an industry, made up of businesses and nonprofits that have to pay employees and keep the stage lights on.It's not a huge surprise that the sector overall has faced funding challenges in recent years, particularly in countries that adopted austerity policies following the 2008 financial crisis. According to a study by the Budapest Observatory, cultural funding from Western European governments dipped after 2008 and has struggled to recover ever since (Eastern European national arts budgets meanwhile, have been steadily growing). When opera houses, ballet companies and art museums lose public subsidies, they are often forced to focus their attention on ticket sales, which means increasing prices and trying to sell out every show. To do this, they plan safer, blockbuster shows and exhibitions with star talent, avoiding riskier works or emerging artists in the process....

Epicurean Cannabis Flowers For Father's Day

Lifestyle
Head's up sons and grand-sons! It's almost too late for the most important, my bad, the next to most important holiday in the year, Mother's Day being the most important holiday... Need I explain this with your mom in the room?If you are like me, Father's Day is a year-in-year-out blur of coffee mugs and mouse pads that read all sorts of corny statements, or that ubiquitous necktie which falls to the bottom of the closet, never to be seen again. But there should be a larger meaning behind the term, Father's Day. It is the one day a year that we pay homage to our own fathers. With that said, may I make some suggestions? Don't fall prey to the typical nor the mundane. I may not have a father, but that doesn't mean that I can't make some Father's Day suggestions on ultra-epicurean cannabis flowers? My own father would have been absolutely horrified that I would make any such recommendations for his day, but that shouldn't stop you from reading on and making your purchases accordingly. After all, fathers like nice things, yet they may not have the time, nor the inclination to shop for epicurean cannabis flowers that are out of their swim-lane. That is where I can be very helpful. My job is simple, find flowers that resonate with me. This is more difficult than it seems with dozens of hand-tended farms out there, each doing their best for the craft, interested in participating. I can only cover so many in the space at my disposal! My apologies!...

Why Moscow Stopped Being The World's Most Expensive City

A survey for ECA International put Moscow down 66 places from 54th.In 2006 and 2007, similar surveys named the Russian capital as the world's most expensive city. The booming Russian economy meant that rents were soaring skywards, taking with them the costs of services. That was before you got to groceries. Finding Solitude on One of the World's Most Popular Hikes

Now, the 2020 Kia Telluride rolls in as this year’s wonder. It might be the best overall offering in this oversaturated market. Built in America and made for outsized American tastes, the largest Kia ever has a handsome Land Rover-esque exterior and spacious luxury-leaning interior. The Telluride punches above its class, especially with a fully-loaded sticker price just shy of $46,000. In size, value, and finish, the Telluride overshadows the competition, including the South Korean brand’s own Kia Sorento, which is a spacious and capable three-row in its own right. 25 Chefs Share Their Favorite Cooking Lessons From Dad

Lifestyle
While many chefs credit their mothers as the inspiration for pursuing a culinary career, for others it was their fathers that took charge of the home kitchen and taught them invaluable lessons that continue to influence their cooking styles and approach to hospitality. In honor of Father’s Day weekend, I asked chefs from across the U.S. to share their favorite cooking lessons they learned from their dads. Here’s what they had to say:Matt Griffin, executive chef and managing partner of Simon & The Whale“My dad taught me to improvise in the kitchen. My dad’s favorite dish is linguini with clams and he would attempt a recipe from a celebrated cookbook author. The recipe required the pasta and fresh clams to be placed together in a foil-wrapped pan and baked and I remember it working once. I also remember an occasion where some of the clams hadn’t opened and the pasta was fully cooked. Adjustments needed to be made, so dad riffed off the recipe by using canned clam juice to open the fresh clams separately. A recipe can help guide the culinary process and provide a framework for a dish, but it can also be looked at as a jumping off point. Trust your culinary instincts and don’t be afraid to shake things up. I’m still putting this lesson to practice in the professional kitchen.”...

Chateau Coutet: Tasting the Terroir in Sauternes

When you think of the first growth chateaux of the Sauternes region in France, you probably imagine picturesque castles, luscious sweet wine, and French families who have owned the land for generations.Château Coutet is located in the Barsac commune of Sauternes, recognized as a Classified First Growth for its sweet wines in the 1855 Bordeaux classification. An appellation within an appellation, Barsac is the most northern of the five communes that constitute the Sauternes region. As such, it has the option of calling its wine either Sauternes or Barsac. In casual conversation, some people might refer to these wines as “Sweet Bordeaux.”Focus on Dry Wine from SauternesIn the last several years, many famous first and second growth producers of Sauternes have focused on a dry style of wine made from the traditional white grapes of the area, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The trend was started by Chateau Yquem’s ‘Y‘ and Château Suduiraut with its “S de Suduiraut.” Reasons for adding dry wine to a historically sweet portfolio vary, yet a key reason is to tap into market demand for a dry terroir-driven wine....

New Jersey's favorite son is as aware or more aware of the grandeur and romanticism of the American west as anybody you will meet. A self-described fan of western movies and surf culture, Springsteen is as passionate and knowledgeable about the mythology of the desert as any artist not named Gram Parsons. The stunning The Ghost Of Tom Joad collection owes a great nod, as Springsteen said, to John Steinbeck....

Tesla Autopilot's Enhanced Summon Is A Nice Concept That Opens A Can Of Worms

Lifestyle
At the Tesla shareholders meeting on Tuesday, one topic that arose involved the newest Autopilot “Enhanced” Summon feature that is being developed and which has been made available in a beta version for some Tesla owners that are in the Tesla Early Access program.Usually referred to as either Enhanced Summon or sometimes as Advanced Summon, the concept is that it is “a parking assist feature that helps you bring your car towards you or towards the destination of your choice by navigating out of parking spaces and maneuvering around objects as necessary” (per the reported beta release notes). There is already an existing Summon feature available that is not considered advanced or enhanced, some say it is “classic” or “simple” Summon, while others point out it is minimally any kind of “summoning” since it involves a human using an app that directs the car to go forward or in reverse and then the vehicle attempts to proceed a short distance, such as backing out of your garage, though Tesla cautions that the car might “not detect certain obstacles, including those that are very narrow (e.g., bikes)” and thus the human remote operator is to “remain prepared to stop the vehicle at any time.”...

Scientists Have Worked Out The Optimal Dose Of Nature Required For Health And Wellbeing

Lifestyle
It is well-accepted that getting outside is good for both physical and mental health. But now scientists have figured out that we should be spending a minimum of 2 hours outside in nature, per week to promote health and wellbeing. The study published today in Scientific Reports and led by researchers at the University of Exeter in the U.K., considered 'nature' to include a variety of settings, including town parks, woodlands, country parks and beaches and found that the two hours could be made up of one, or several smaller visits - with the same positive effects on wellbeing. The research involved data from 20,000 people in England and found the 2 hour threshold applied to both men and women, older and younger adults, people from a variety of ethnic groups and there was no differences in the benefits gained based on occupation, income or in people with chronic illnesses or disabilities. Essentially, 2 hours in nature is good for everyone....

Misfit Waits Until Mom Dies To Track Down Biological Dad, Learns He Was Closer Than She Thought

Lifestyle
Sue grew up feeling a bit like the odd man out among her siblings. Not in a bad way, but in a way that made her just feel different. She was always a real go-getter, and a clean freak, while the rest of her siblings had traits and characteristics in contrast to hers. Sue’s life turned upside down when she learned the reason she felt so different: The man who raised her and the man she considered her dad was not actually her biological father. Sue was the daughter of another man, but she had no idea who he was or where he lived. At the age of 18, Sue mustered up the courage to ask her mother those critical questions, like, “Who am I?” and, “Who’s my real dad?” She didn’t get much information in return. ...

ROAM Beyond: Glamping Meets Van Life

Lifestyle
The glamping and #vanlife movements continue to thrive in remote and not-so-remote locations around the world. The latest manifestation comes from a Seattle-based company called ROAM Beyond. Started by two experienced leaders in the adventure travel field, they’ve created a hybrid that borrows from both movements. The company has just announced the launch of two unique, off-the-grid glamping destinations in Washington State, in Kaloch along the coast, and in North Bend in the mountains. These are spectacular locations. The Kalaloch property offers glamping near the Hoh Rainforest & Washington Coast on the Olympic Peninsula, next to Olympic National Park. The North Bend location is in the Cascades. Willow Industries: Decontamination Solutions To The Cannabis Industry

Lifestyle
Medical Cannabis grown for healing purposes has a unique and tangible responsibility in the dichotomy of good health. Medical cannabis offers relief to the sick and must do so without making that individual even more ill from hidden mold and contamination. This is certainly a possibility, even in the most "clean" environments. As an organic vehicle, cannabis like many other edible plants are susceptible to disease and infections that can make a person really ill or worse. Contamination is unacceptable in cannabis cultivation.Enter Willow Industries to the commercial cultivation scene. Without cleanliness in the final product, there can be no healing. Anyone who works in the business of edibles or even smoke-ables would know that contamination in the flower could cost serious money in the deep decontamination for the entire grow facility. When profit margins are razor thin, a contaminated crop could cause a company to fail, not to mention the loss of their essential "good-will." This means, quite simply that the good name of the company will forever be identified with a destructive contamination. Good will is what keeps a company in business. It is their name and their reputation. If a grow facility. That's certainly not a positive direction for any company to take, especially when big name recognition is what pushes the industry forward....

More Retailers Than Ever Are Accepting American Express

Lifestyle
Forbes has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. Forbes and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers. First impressions are incredibly important because it takes much more work to change an opinion once someone has made up their mind. That's exactly the predicament American Express finds itself in as it works hard to overcome the notion that fewer merchants accept Amex cards compared to Visa or Mastercard. While that absolutely used to be true, Amex is in the midst of a five year long campaign to increase acceptance at merchants around the world and the results are quite impressive.Amex Is Closing The Gap It makes perfect sense that Amex would want you to be able to use your card at more stores, but Amex believes that it's customers are actually more valuable for merchants as well. According to a Nilson report, Amex customers spend an average of $14,000 a year on their cards, 3.1x more than non-Amex customers. Similarly, the average transaction size of an Amex customer is 1.8x larger than a non-card member’s. So why is it that fewer merchants accept Amex cards? Historically, the reason has been because Amex charged higher interchange fees or "swipe fees" than Visa and Mastercard did. ...

What It Means To Be A Parent In ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

Lifestyle
Bringing new life into the world is complicated in the Republic of Gilead. There are the handmaids, who are tasked with breeding children; the Commanders, who father said children during brutal bedding “ceremonies”; and the Wives, who mother the children once the handmaid gives birth. It’s a sick cycle, one that questions consent and the sacredness of motherhood. At the end of ”The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 2, Commander Fred Waterford’s (Joseph Fiennes) wife Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) — knowingGilead is no place for an innocent baby girl— decides to help her handmaid June (Elisabeth Moss) get their daughter Nichole to safety. But June, wrecked that her other daughter Hannah (Jordana Blake)is still in the Republic, makes the unpopular choice to stay. Landscape Painting Made Radical

“In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks,” John Muir. The same can be said of a walk through the Baltimore Museum of Art’s Expressions of Nature exhibit.Forget Albert Bierstadt. Forget the Hudson River School. Forget Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and the mid-19th century French Barbizon painters. Forget the realistic, sublime, quiet, reserved recreations of nature you are accustomed to.This is tour de force landscape painting where the occasionally staid genre collides head-on with Modern Art as interpreted by many of the movement’s most prominent and avant-garde practitioners.“The landscapes included in our exhibition (through September 22) can be seen as wonderful examples of artistic freedom, where the love of the medium—whether it be paint, charcoal, or watercolor—is explored and pushed in new and exciting ways,” Katy Rothkopf, BMA Senior Curator of European Painting and Sculpture, said. “Unlike landscapes of the 18th and early 19th centuries, where a story or moral lesson was typically included in the scene, the modern artists seen in this show are producing work without those boundaries.”...

7 Refreshing Canned Cocktails To Sip Lakeside Or Liven Up Your Pool Party

Lifestyle
Summer is upon us, and so are lakeside barbecues and pool parties. Lucky for us, canned cocktails are all the rage right now, and fierce competition for the market has even the big names jumping in on the trend. Quality is steadily improving as well, so no one will frown upon you for ditching the disposable cups and sipping straight from the can.Uncle Billy’s Sparkling Craft CocktailsAustin-based Uncle Billy’s was the first producer in Texas to introduce ready-to-drink canned cocktails made with real spirits. The brewstillery’s line of sparkling craft cocktails - created by distilling expert Mark Shilling, who previously launched Uncle Billy’s line of spirits, and beverage manager and in-house mixologist Josh Mabrey - is made with vodka rather than malt beverage for a crisp taste and higher AVB. Mabrey, who creates Uncle Billy’s tap cocktails, reformulated his recipes with infused spirits, fresh juices and house-made syrups for packaging in cans. Leslie’s Cucumber Sipper combines fresh cucumbers – hand-peeled and juiced in-house- with tonic water for a dry super refresher, while the Lady Bird Lemonade tastes homemade, with lovely notes of lavender and honey. The Vimosa is a take on the classic mimosa, with the addition of pineapple and coconut syrup for a tropical twist. 'Not For Everyone': Clues, Conjecture And What Elon Said About The Tesla Electric Pickup Truck

In a previous post, I opined (futilely, I'm sure) that in order to sell electric pickup trucks to the current pickup-driving masses, major car and truck makers should make their electric pickups essentially visual and functional copies of their current offerings but with electric drivetrains, much like how they used to make identical cars and trucks with either automatic or manual transmissions. With Tesla, I expect nothing of the sort. Before you accuse me of some hypocritical double standard, understand that, of course, Tesla doesn't have any sort of legacy from which to copy a pickup truck (or much of anything else for that matter, except perhaps the original roadster). A number were started in the first decade of this century, but by 2009, Eos Airlines, MAXjet Airways, SilverJet and L'Avion all ceased operation, as oil prices hit $100 a barrel.(Full disclosure: I own stock in Jet Blue, American Airline and Southwest.)While all-Business Class has previously failed, based on its five-year staying power, La Compagnie may be onto something. The New Douro: The Top Douro Valley Dry Red Wines For Value In 2017

Lifestyle
Though port remains one of the greatest wines in the world, it’s no secret the sweet fortified category has struggled to attract a younger audience. In a world focused on fresh, dry and new vintages, one might ask if port runs the risk of dying out. If that sounds outlandish, let me explain. The region from which it hails, the Douro Valley, stands as a 9th wonder of the world with its breathtaking stone terraces hugging the contours of the riverside landscape. But those steep, sloped terraces are a beast to farm; backbreaking to harvest. Young people don't want to do it. Since the valley has largely been driven by agriculture, few other jobs exist. And without good jobs in the valley, most folks have fled to cities leaving nobody to work the vineyards, occupy homes, or run businesses. Mechanization will have to be part of the solution and drones have been discussed, but did you see that picture above? Not easy. So, money for investment in research and solutions is needed but it can’t only derive from slumping sales of port. So, what’s the future of the valley? In part, selling dry table wines – which is where the Primeira Prova tasting event factors in....

Italy's Indigenous Varieties - Part One

Lifestyle
While I write about wines from the world over, Italian wines are my specialty, and let's face it, my favorite. As far as I'm considered, there are enough examples - excellent ones at that - of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a few other varieties one can find from numerous countries. But the joy - or the curse, depending on your point of view - of Italian viticulture is the work realized with local varieties that in many instances are not found anywhere else in the world, or in some instances, are not planted outside a small district in one specific Italian region....

Why Having Chargers At Small-Town Walmarts Could Help Spur Electric Car Sales

Lifestyle
Both well-established automakers and high-tech upstart companies alike are planning a slew of new full-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles for the coming model years in anticipation of a future where the roads are populated with battery-powered cars, crossover SUVs and even pickup trucks. They could well be necessary for manufacturers to achieve corporate average fuel economy quotas down the road, but there’s no telling if sufficient demand will be there to make them sustainable in the marketplace.According to InsideEVs.com, 110,886 full-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles were sold in the U.S. this year through the end of May. That’s more than the 99,226 plug-in cars sold over the same period in 2018, but it’s still a drop in the proverbial bucket as a percentage of overall new-vehicle sales, which reportedly stand at over 4.7 million units year-to-date....

Mention electric cars today and most people picture a high-end Tesla and the price tag that comes with it. One study finds that when fuel savings are accounted for, EVs are already at cost parity in some markets and that automakers could reap profits comparable to or greater than gas-powered cars by or before 2025....

But, as Equinox knows, what you put in your body is essential to living a healthy life, so it put food and beverage at the forefront, so Ara Patterson, Equinox vice president of Food & Beverage, and Kyle Knall, the executive chef at Electric Lemon, the hotel’s restaurant, conceived of an in-room dining menu that features items that energize, nourish, and wind down. “When we set out to conceptualize the menu, it was of paramount importance to us to be true to the Equinox brand ethos of catering to and inspiring high-performance individuals. With this in mind, we developed a whole menu based on cutting-edge research with room for pleasure without the guilt,” said Patterson. “It’s all about providing nourishment with a healthy dash of naughtiness.” “We designed the menu with nutrition and quality top of mind,” added Knall. “All items are flavorful, low-fat and executed on a high-level. My Brother, Two Dogs, Two Cats, And 2,800 Miles In A $5,000 Pickup Truck: An Epic American Road Trip

Sometimes a road trip is more than a journey from point A to point B. Sometimes, it’s a trip into your past that changes your present and your future. This is the story of how I traveled from Los Angeles to Detroit with my brother, two big dogs and two angry cats in a $5,000 pickup truck, and lived to tell the tale.My wife Robin and I decided that it was time for a big change. We had lived in the Los Angeles area for 17 years, having relocated from New York City in 2000. We had ridden the real estate rollercoaster in the San Fernando Valley, and it felt like the right time to jump off. Robin’s daily commute to Wilshire and Fairfax was just under 10 miles, yet frequently left her confined in her car for three hours per day. She was feeling unfulfilled at her job, where she worked as an HR manager for a high-tech film and television post-production company. She wanted to go back into education, which was not a realistic possibility in Los Angeles. We needed to find a place where home prices and the cost of living were lower, where Robin could get a job teaching, and where I could continue to work as a freelance automotive journalist. After some research and a few exploratory trips, we discovered that we could find what we needed in the Detroit area. We jumped in, put our house on the market, and found a property in Canton, Michigan that we fell in love with. The whole process from idea to action took us about 60 days. Now we had to move....

Best Scotch In Asia? San Francisco World Spirits Competition Launches In Singapore

Lifestyle
On June 5th and 6th, for the first time ever, the company behind the famed San Francisco World Spirits Competition launched its first Asia-based branch, the Singapore World Spirits Competition. The owning company, Tasting Alliance, held a very successful two-day competition in Singapore, supported by their team, local help, and Asia-based judges, mostly introduced by the judges from their US competitions. The event marked a bright future for the growing brand in Asia’s spirits and drinks scene. As with the other arms of the competition, that take place in New York and San Francisco, the Tasting Alliance invited twelve established figures in Asia’s drinks industry to Singapore to judge the spirits entered. While the competition is still much smaller than the U.S. editions, hundreds of spirits were sent to be judged, clearly showing the company’s reach globally. Held at The ExciseMan whisky bar, one of Singapore’s newest bars, the judging took place over two days. The main highlight was China’s mysterious Baijiu, which made a strong appearance with over 90 entries. The Singapore World Spirits Competition already took the title of the second largest Baijiu judging competition outside of China. With a baijiu expert in attendance, panels included many varieties from the different baijiu categories, which are broken down by their aroma. Most entries fell under the ‘strong aroma’ baijiu category, which accounts for almost 70 per cent of China’s baijiu production.
