Hundreds Of Flights Canceled As SAS Pilots Strike In Scandinavia

Lifestyle
More than 70,000 passengers will suffer canceled or delayed flights across Europe on Friday as more than 1,400 pilots strike in a row over pay and the predictability of their shift patterns. During Friday 673 flights will be canceled, with uncertainty on hundreds more over the weekend.International flights hit hardestThe strike affects most domestic and European departures, and all long-haul flights including those to/from the US. The strike does not include flights operated by SAS partners such as CityJet, which make up approximately 30% of all departures. SAS will send updates via SMS and email to those passengers affected, with some already booked on routes with rival airlines.“First and foremost, we apologize”, SAS information chief Knut Morten Johansen told NRK. “Now, fortunately, we have done a good job in advance to reduce the scope. We made a solid move yesterday by pre-canceling so that there was more predictability today. I think we have a less chaotic situation at the airports than would otherwise have been the case.”...

Too Big To Fail U.S. Pacific Island Casino Keeps Failing

Lifestyle
Last Friday’s Marianas Variety newspaper reports the Rotary Club of Saipan raked in US$34,000 from a Las Vegas Night. Perhaps the Rotarians can teach Imperial Pacific International how to operate a profitable casino on the U.S. Pacific island, part of the Commonwealth of Northern Marianas Islands. Hong Kong listed IPI declared a loss of nearly HK$3 billion (US$382 million) for last year. After reporting stratospheric VIP volumes under former Sands China and Trump Casinos head Mark Brown, IPI has written off more than HK$9.7 billion in player debt, and still carries almost HK$5 billion, more than five times its reported profits since opening a temporary casino in a shopping mall in July 2015. Worse, its partly built hotel in Garapan, Saipan’s central tourist district, is an eyesore, a federal case and, to some, a desecration. Worse, after providing more than half the CNMI budget in fiscal 2018, IPI is failing to deliver government revenue, a justification for casino legalization despite consecutive referendums that voted no. Deemed too big to fail, IPI is failing....

Parents, Don't Fall Into the Sunk-Cost Fallacy With Youth Sports

Lifestyle
Perhaps you have heard of the concept of the sunk-cost fallacy. What that means is, you continue to invest in something merely because you have already spent so much money or time or other resources on it that you continue do so even though it's clear you will never see a return on that investment. Think of staying in a bad relationship, or continuing to invest financially and emotionally in a dying business, or, because I'm bringing this up, dreaming that your youth sports investment will pay off big when any objective observer would conclude that will never happen. The sunk-cost fallacy isn't mentioned by name in a survey of parents recently released by LendingTree that finds 81 percent of them think what they've spend on their kids' activities -- sports or otherwise -- may lead to future income for their children, and that the more parents spent, the more likely they were to believe this. The online survey of 724 Americans, commissioned by LendingTree's Comparecards.com credit-card division, was conducted April 2-10, 2019, has a margin of error of 3.6 percentage points....

How Bibhu Mohapatra Designs Fashion With A Juxtaposition That Compliments Modern Lifestyle

Lifestyle
There is one common element in almost all business cycles. Reform. In short, it is capital and ideas which are essential for making positive change. Numerous factors determine a brand's success and whether its strategies are good investments. Inflation and interest rates, consumer spending, and business confidence are important in the short run. In the long run, though, a fashion brand becomes successful depending on whether it has the right mix of people, capital and ideas. Get these fundamentals right, and the short-run gyrations seldom matter.Building a fashion company involves phasing out old designs, re-designing existing ones and creating new ones. The robustness of the fashion designer Bibhu Mohapatra was evident upon his first fashion show in 2009. A powerful fashion designer and a constant agitator, he became an idol of the fashion world. It is indeed difficult to determine what motivated a designer such as Bibhu, nevertheless I will give it a go....

Andaz Mayakoba: How To Eat Your Way Around This Riviera Maya Property

Lifestyle
Year-round people flock to the Riviera Maya for great weather, white-sand beaches and the beautiful landscape (turquoise, crystal-clear cenotes anyone?). If you want to get away from it all and soak up the sun then Andaz Mayakoba should be at the top of your list. Even more so if you like to eat well — the hotel has multiple restaurants and dining destinations where you can enjoy Mexican and international cuisine. Better yet, you can eat indoors or outdoors and navigate between casual eats to fine dining to please your palate. Here’s how to eat your way around this beachside property.Dinner – SotaventoLet’s start with dinner because, in my opinion, that’s the best meal of the day (sorry breakfast lovers, you’re not going to sway me on this one.) If it’s your first day traveling you’ll likely be in transit early or for lunch, so dinner is a great time to relax and enjoy a great meal. Head to beachside restaurant Sotavento to take in the ocean breeze and overlook the water. The restaurant's design and decor are inspired by a shipwreck that washed up on the Mayakoba. The menu is filled with Mediterranean delights — try their hummus served with tasty lavosh bread to start then segway into the many grilled delights the restaurant has to offer. The Mayan octopus is incredible, as is the tender ribeye....

The World's Most Expensive Mint Julep And Other Kentucky Derby Cocktail Recipes

Lifestyle
The first Saturday of every May is reserved for a 145-year-old tradition: the running of the Kentucky Derby. Men suit up in seersucker, women cap themselves in fascinators, and they all hold Mint Juleps in-hand. Like the outfits, certain cocktails are markedly more elaborate than others. Woodford Reserve, the official bourbon of the race, has made a splash over the past decade, offering specialty Juleps at the event for upwards of a $1000 a pop. What goes into such a high-priced tipple? Let's take a look. This year's $1K Mint Julep contains 2oz. of Woodford Reserve straight bourbon and locally sourced honey sweetener, garnished with fresh mint and a honeycomb. Nothing too out of the ordinary in that recipe. The drink's serving vessel is what truly sets it apart: a silver cup, with the famous spires of Churchill Downs etched into its metallic exterior. If that isn't fancy enough for you, there's a $2500 variation poured into an actual golden cup....

Lifestyle
Talking to Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas is thoroughly enjoyable. He is one of those artists who doesn't take himself so seriously at all, making it always a pleasure to speak to him. For instance, when I explained to him that much of the impetus for the Who I Am column I began a year ago with Shirley Manson of Garbage was because she and I agreed that you could only do so many interviews where the artist says, "My new album is the best album I've ever made," Thomas of course immediately responds laughing, "My one through 10 is my new album is the best album I've ever done."His new solo album, Chip Tooth Smile (out this Friday, April 26) is vintage Thomas -- smart songwriting, excellent pop/rock craftsmanship, eclectic and at times moving, at times, fun, and always solid....

This Disabled CEO Built A Top Business That's A Real Life Saver (The Statistics Will Astound You)

Since middle school, my friends have saddled me with the nickname, “Safety Pup." I didn't love it at the time, but now, a few decades forward, I admit that I'm the fellow who custom-ordered his most recent car, because, incredibly, the car manufacturer listed rear side airbags as an “available option” rather than as standard equipment.Water safety is a particular passion of mine, as I've long understood that drowning is a leading cause of accidental death among young children, and pretty prominent as well for people of all ages. (I don’t need to wear you down with statistics on this; LiveScience has already done the grisly honors.)So, I enjoyed getting in contact with Eric Lupton, the entrepreneurial president of Life Saver Pool Fence. A Celebration Of Haystack, Coastal Maine's Visionary Crafts School

Lifestyle
On a misty morning a few years ago while exploring the coast of Maine, I had a chance to visit the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Now forget whatever the word "crafts" brings to mind. Founded in 1950, this school on the shores of rugged Deer Isle has long been an incubator for American design and crafts. Experimental, radical and cutting edge, Haystack artists defined midcentury modern and the school had been on my wishlist for ages. The reasons for my enthusiasm for Haystack were the now-legendary artists who came to work and to teach there. In the early days, they included the likes of Anni Albers, Dale Chihuly, Robert Ebendorf, Jack Lenor Larsen, M.C. Richards, and Toshiko Takaezu, who taught there in the 1950s and contributed to a dynamic community of craftspeople who broke new ground across a wide range of media. Among them, Albers, a textile designer, was a student and eventually a teacher at the Bauhaus, as well as the first textile designer to have an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. Larsen has continued to have an outsize effect on the direction of American design over a very long career while Chihuly has gone on to become one of the most popular contemporary artists in America, a maestro of glassworks....

‘Game of Thrones’ Insiders Claim No Collusion Between Tyrion And Cersei

Lifestyle
One of the biggest mysteries heading into “Game of Thrones” Season 8 were the precise details of the deal Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) made with Cersei (Lena Headey) in the Season 7 finale.  In that episode, Tyrion meets privately with his sister to try to convince her to send her army north to help in the fight against the army of the dead. As they’re talking, though, he realizes she’s pregnant, and the scene cuts off shortly afterward. The next thing we know, Cersei is rejoining Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) at the Dragonpit to tell them she’s suddenly changed her mind and will send her army north after all. Uh, what? She was, of course, lying to everyone. Cersei never had plans to send her army to fight, a point viewers thought Tyrion should’ve picked up on from the start. This left two possibilities: Either Tyrion’s planning something diabolical behind the scenes with Cersei, or his decision-making skills have become as crappy as the sewers he was in charge of at Casterly Rock....

Vito Glazers: Entrepreneurial Influence Marketing Through Excellence

Lifestyle
WB: Tell me about yourself. What makes you the thought leader in your field? What is influencer marketing? How does it work?Vito Glazers: My name is Vito Glazers and I am the 33 year old founder of One World Publishing. Over the past 15 years I have established myself as an advertising expert and content producer who has been dedicated to bridging the gap between art and business. My career started in digital marketing and eventually took me on an incredible journey that included being a part of some cutting edge news shows, record breaking reality television programs, and most recently opened the opportunity to begin producing my own films. My current role as the leadership for One World Publishing is to help people, causes and brands develop and tell their stories and build audiences through digital content, social media, news stories, and traditional media like radio, television and film. Being a thought leader is usually something that just happens from constantly challenging the accepted norms of any industry. It is never easy to be the first to do anything or to go against the status quo. My entire career has been about trying to pioneer the next path and opportunity. The cycle for me has been the same over the years; first they doubt, then they hate, then they imitate, then they call for advice. When people in the advertising business were completely focused on data and metrics, I was one of the first to be focused on brand legacy, creative contribution to society, and social resonance. I have butted heads with a lot of people over the years. I will admit that when I was younger, I might have gotten too aggressive and let me ambitions take things too far sometimes. Content, advertising, and influencer marketing are all highly disruptive and evolve very quickly, so if you are not a leader and disruptor in some capacity, it is impossible to sustain any kind of longevity....

Top Designers to Watch from Belgrade Fashion Week Spring 2019

Lifestyle
Our first visit this spring to Belgrade, Serbia was a revelation in more ways than one. The vibrant capital city certainly lived up to its reputation as the city that "never sleeps" with its energetic nightlife. And it was full of surprises, namely its highly creative and imaginative fashion week - the main purpose of our visit. Launched in 1996, Belgrade Fashion Week, the oldest Fashion Week in Eastern Europe, just wrapped up its 45th edition. This is not a fashion event well known outside of Eastern Europe mainly because it features only local designers whose collections don't generally have international distribution. Before attending this month's Belgrade Fashion Week, the only Serbian designer with a major international presence that I was aware of was London-based Roksanda Ilincic. But BFW is an impressive event that should be on every fashion editor's radar. The high production values on the catwalk, the range of designers and quality of the fabrics and the workmanship behind the designs were all top notch. The quality of BFW in general, from the designs to the production, was higher than I expected, especially as Serbian designers have greater challenges in terms of lower budgets and in sourcing materials and manufacturing the garments than British or American designers have....

WB: Why Cannabis? Tell me about your passion for Cannabis. When did you first become aware of it?1st Lady Of The West Coast: Cannabis saved my life from pharmaceutical drugs doctors had me on due to having bipolar depression. I have bipolar depression due to being a crack baby who was born prematurely. I was 2 pounds. I was supposed to be a March baby but I’m Nov. baby, so you can see how early I was premature and struggled to live. I have a chemical imbalance in my brain. I’ve been on so many different pharmaceutical drugs for bipolar depression since I was 16 years old to the point where doctors kept switching my meds up due to what they were doing to my liver and kidneys. Man, I felt like a zombie being on Prozac and Abilify. The doctors were always changing the dose of my meds and kept saying they were working. But I only felt lethargic and horrible, like I couldn’t function, let alone think for myself. The lies they told – the drugs were was destroying my body, killing me. I’m passionate about cannabis because it’s a natural, organic plant and I don’t have to worry about putting chemicals in the body! I started studying the medical benefits of cannabis back in 2009. I knew there was a natural alternative then what the doctors are prescribing me. For me, I got tired of hearing, “Oh, we have to change the dose of your medicine because it’s messing with your liver and kidneys.” After years of hearing this, all I could think is, that, if I keep going at this rate, my liver may stop functioning and my kidneys fail on me. Doctors don’t care; it would be another diagnosis of pharmaceutical drugs used to destroy other parts of a person’s body. I first became aware of it at the age of 13. My big sister smoked cannabis' at the time I didn’t understand it that much. As I was taking D.A.R.E class shaking my head at the lies they told us about cannabis, I believed them. My sister was self-medicating and it was helping her. I remember the first time I smoked cannabis I was 16. I smoked it with my homies Diego and Kevin in my backyard back in 2004. I remember feeling ok, not stressed, not worried, not angry or upset but calm and relaxed – like my bipolar symptoms were disappearing. I noticed being more creative with cannabis at the age of 16. I remember being 17 outside my house smoking and looking up at the sky with my big sister and saying, “Sis, it would be so dope if I had my own strain line, like my own, like it’s mine they created it for me?” I was 17 speaking this and today I’m here to witness the reality and am the 1st Black woman to have my own exclusive strain line. I have three lines to date. It’s a blessing because I can help save lives for the better and being able to educate others about the amazing benefits of cannabis and what it can do for the body. ...

April Auto Sales Show The Industry Still Catching Up With Truck Demand

Lifestyle
Forecasters expect April auto sales to be roughly flat to down slightly, continuing the trend where truck sales outnumber car sales more than 2-to-1.That cuts both ways for Ford Motor Co., General Motors and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. The so-called Detroit 3 already offer an overwhelmingly truck-heavy mix. The mix is getting even more so, since the domestic manufacturers have just about abandoned the passenger-car market in favor of trucks.Trucks are more popular and on average more profitable per unit than cars. According to Edmunds, for instance, market share for pickup trucks is expected to reach 17% in April, the highest for the month of April since 2005.But in the short run kicking cars to the curb is costing the domestics some volume and creating an opportunity for import passenger-car brands. Is 'Sugar Rush' All In Our Heads? New Study Raises Doubts About Sugar's Effect on Mood

Though most people have probably reached for a candy bar or a pint of ice cream to boost their mood, or a can of soda for some energy, a new study suggests that this apparently natural inclination may be useless, or worse. The meta-analysis from University of Warwick and Humboldt University finds that people get neither a mood boost or an energy boost from sugar, and may even feel lower in the hours after consuming it.The study was published this month in the journal Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews. A slew of earlier studies had suggested that carbohydrate consumption is associated with a number of benefits including increased energy and reduced fatigue, enhanced cognition or clear-headedness, and improved mood. But the research on carbs and mood is actually not so reliable, the researchers behind the new study write, and some research even suggests it has negative effects....

Gewurztraminer - Don't Say It, Just Drink it

Of all the world's great wine grapes, Gewurztraminer may be the least understood. Perhaps it's the fact that it's not the easiest word to pronounce (geh-voortz-tra-meen-er). Or maybe it's the fact that there are various styles, some quite dry, many others lightly or even moderately sweet. Regardless, it's one of the most unique varieties planted anywhere, and the wines produced from it are highly appealing. The grapes themselves are easy to recognize as they ripen, as they are a deep pink. So too, the aromas of Gewurztraminer are highly distinctive, with aromas ranging from lychee and grapefruit to yellow roses and even lanolin. You don't find perfumes such as these in other varieties, and indeed, along with the Muscat (Moscato) grape, Gewurztraminer is quite easy to recognize by just smelling the wine in a glass....

Ice Champagne: How To Drink Your Bubbly Like You're In The South Of France

Lifestyle
In some circles, adding ice to champagne is the height of déclassé, but in the South of France, it been de rigor for quite some time. Champagne on ice is even said to be the drink of choice for Brigitte Bardot during her heyday. To meet the demand for this way of drinking champagne, a few select and progressive maisons have tackled the trend head-on and created champagnes specifically designed to be drunk on ice.“Several years ago, champagne served over ice—known as a ‘piscine’—was becoming more and more popular, particularly in the summertime hotspots around the South of France,” says Moët & Chandon’s Chef de Cave Benoît Gouez. “Of course, nobody wants to drink warm champagne in the summer, but as a winemaker, I was concerned about the effect the ice has on the wine: It dilutes the champagne and totally breaks the balance that I—and my fellow Chefs de Caves—work so hard to achieve. So I was inspired to create a cuvée to be served over ice, and in 2011 Moët Ice Impérial was launched.”...

'Game Of Thrones': Who Will Slay The Night King?

Last week’s episode, "A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms," was dedicated to fleshing out the characters and their ever-evolving relationships, securing our emotional investment before the inevitable loss. But there’s another question on my mind - who will be the one to slay the Night King? Assuming that he is slain at all, of course. Jon Snow At first glance, Jon seems the obvious candidate; he has the most personal relationship with the Night King (with the exception of Bran, who didn’t make this list, for obvious reasons). Jon has faced the Night King twice, in his two semi-suicidal trips beyond the Wall. ...

The Real Questions About 2020 Presidential Candidates Are Not Age-Related

Lifestyle
In December 2018 when Elizabeth Warren, 69, announced her bid for Presidency, an ongoing age debate began. Never mind that the incumbent President is 72. Then came Bernie Sanders, 77, and now Joe Biden, 76. Everyday media headlines continue the age argument while social media feeds are filled with ageist remarks.More troubling than the irrelevancy of age when evaluating which candidate one should support is that every discourse on the topic detracts from the real questions: “The 21st century has not been good to us,” writes Paul Brandus in his Market Watch article. “Wars, two crippling recessions, a devastating terror attack, surging debt and a gnawing sense that something is wrong and we have somehow lost our way. Young or old, man or woman, black, white or brown, whoever we choose must convince us that they know the way forward.”...

South Texas Vaquero-Style Cuisine Lives On At Davila's BBQ In Seguin

Lifestyle
Seguin, Texas is a small agricultural community, one of the oldest in Texas, populated by a melting pot of Anglo settlers, local Tejanos, African Americans and German immigrants who thrived for decades on cotton and cattle. This is where, after years as a butcher and sausage maker in Luling and Fredericksburg, Raul Davila opened shop in an old abandoned school house in 1959. Davila's BBQ restaurant opened for business with no decorations and no cash register, with the Davila family making their home in the two back rooms of the building. Sixty years and three generations later, Davila’s is still going strong.Third generation pitmaster Adrian Davila leads the restaurant and continues the family legacy with recipes passed down through generations. He celebrates culinary traditions of Mexico and Texas, infusing brisket, ribs and sausage with Mexican flavors and ingredients. His signature dishes, such as mesquite smoked lamb ribs, trace their culinary roots back to the vaqueros — cowboys who once roamed the plains of Texas and Mexico and developed a unique style of cooking that adapted to their nomadic lifestyle. Davila considers them as the first pitmasters since they dug actual pits to slow-smoke whole animals while herding their cattle....

'Avengers: Endgame' World Premiere In LA Shines Spotlight On Luxury Watches Fit For Superheroes

Lifestyle
Marvel Studios held the official premiere for Avengers: Endgame in Los Angeles two days before the movie’s much-anticipated general-public opening in Europe on Wednesday. Just about all of the major cast members were in attendance, many of them sporting gorgeous luxury wristwatches. With expected opening weekend projections falling between $260 and $300 million – which would set a new record – the choice of one watch over another on a given star’s wrist at this premiere could mean a lot to the brand making it. Are there any bigger influencers in the world right now? Certainly not this month.Which is surely a big part of why Jaeger-LeCoultre chose Dr. Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch as a brand ambassador. In Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’ (2016) he wore a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Perpetual. But in early 2018 he became an official ambassador to the brand, and by the premiere of Avengers: Infinity War in May 2018 he was regularly wearing the brand’s sporty new Polaris watches. Dr. Strange is the keeper of the time stone in the Marvel Universe, so it only stands to reason that a timepiece would be an important part of his story. And at the Avengers: Endgame premier he chose to wear the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra-Thin Date....

How To Tell The Story Of Wine (Part Three): A Generational Narrative From Napa

Lifestyle
Note: This mini-series about telling the stories of wine touches on several disparate examples from the industry, including a well-known Italian winery's "West Meets East" campaign to the historical fiction example of Dueling Pistols to, today, a multi-generational example from California's Napa Valley. These are only a few of the "genres" of narrative that can be found in wine and that is part of the point: there are many pathways to achieving the end goal of effectively communicating key messages. What the story is and how it's told, however, is often less important than the fact that there IS a story that the winery has well-defined. Today's post starts with an illustration that shows how often that is not the case....

Mother's Day Gift Guide: The Sweetest Scents This Season For The Sweetest Mother's

Lifestyle
Part of the challenge in developing any evaluation is putting the evaluative claim in proper form. This is particularly true of fragrance evaluations. In the most highly developed societies, fragrance still has a power over our senses. For most men, purchasing women's fragrance has always been a conflict of narratives. Judged by the yardstick of masculinity, the majority of us American men prove to be confused as to which fragrance is just right for her. Before you can evaluate a fragrance, you must make clear what type of woman you are considering to give this gift to on Mother's Day. The very same fragrance can be construed as a member of several different categories.Think of women's fragrance. In addition to serving as fragrance, it can be used as a display on a dresser or vanity. Before you evaluate the fragrance, be aware of how you think the product will be worn and displayed by the user. Different users make different demands on their fragrance. A fragrance that might be practical for one consumer may be impractical for another....

Move Over Easter Bunny: There's A Cork Hunt At Belden Barns Winery In Sonoma

Lifestyle
Before I had children, I never spent much time considering the kid-friendliness of wineries. Now that I have two (ages 5 and 10), I'm always on the lookout for wineries that welcome little travelers — most do not, at least explicitly. And that makes a kind of sense, especially when you go to consider the history of alcohol in the U.S., (many states still have blue laws restricting alcohol sales on certain days and/or times), not to mention the reasonable laws wineries have to obey to be both responsible and stay in business. On the other hand, not welcoming kids makes no sense at all, given that grapes grow in some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, perfect places, too, for frolic and (sober) wreckless abandon. In California Wine Country, several notable wineries embrace the idea of winery visits as much more than simply tasting, spitting, buying, and heading off to the next stop on the well-plotted trail. The trend now is to hang out, enjoy the property, get to know the people, strike up conversations with other visitors, and really enjoy the wine....

Yours truly accounts for 15 of those attempts between 2014 and 2019.It's possible to ride it on a road bike, though the dirt section would be a punishing exercise in futility. The Mom-Mobile Is A Myth. Women Are Image-Driven In Car Selection, Too

Lifestyle
Proving that some stereotypes are just that, a recent survey revealed that women are image-driven, not just practicality-driven, in choosing a vehicle. But they are capable of the practical, with 69% of the random population sample saying they can manually service their own vehicles. The AYTM research was commissioned by peer-to-peer vehicle sharing service Turo for the company’s Lady Boss campaign. The female-targeted marketing effort deconstructs outdated concepts of women as drivers and highlights strong women ascending in male-dominated industries, particularly NASCAR race driver Julia Landauer.Fortunate for Turo, moms as a demographic are more complex than stereotypes, too. Seventy-one percent don’t think mini-vans match their personality and 59% of all women prefer sporty cars. This is where Turo as a service comes in, allowing moms to ditch the family vehicle and roll a Mini Cooper for the day when they’re feeling sporty.
