On July 15, the Majestic Yosemite Hotel announced a change that should please all fans of Yosemite National Park's history: the historic hotel has finally earned the rights to again legally use its original name, the Ahwahnee, after a three-year legal battle over intellectual property rights.

For nearly 90 years, Yosemite National Park's most luxurious lodging option was the Ahwahnee Hotel, built in 1927. The high-end hotel was designed to attract guests to the park after a few years of declining attendance numbers, and the effort was successful: the hotel became one of the most well-known lodging options in the country, attracting travelers from across the western United States for decades. It was designed by celebrity architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood, who also designed other resorts at well-known parks in Utah and Arizona.
